This game is super fun.



I'm going back for New Game Plus and 100% item completion.

To be completely honest I'm really getting sick of these retro games that are coming out. It was really cool 4-5 years ago when they first started coming back but now that EVERYONE is making them it's getting really old.

That being said this doesn't look like a bad game, but not one I'd wanna play honestly.

technically the only retro thing about it is the pixel art style which is a style that can be used for games with an entirely new style of gameplay from this game its just a art style choice. the gameplay is a set genre that still can be done in any game that doesn't have pixel art so saying your sick of the retro games coming is like saying your tired of any game that uses pixel art these days.

But the thing is, even when the games are "original and new concepts", it's still the same 8-bit retro style, and it's nothing new. I'd rather see more games with 3d than pixls at this point.

It's a fair criticism, even if you don't agree with it.


A lot of people aren't too fond of Kickstartered games because a huge amount are 8/16/32 Bit that rely on their gimmicks because art is hard.

As an avid lover of sprited materials, I love the concept of X Bit with beautiful, modern animation, as is the case with Shovel Knight.

I don't know how many of you guys are aware of this, but good 8-bit is difficult to pull off. You've got limitations to the amount of room you have to work with, and the colors you can use. It's a real aesthetic, and it's not laziness.

It often is laziness, but not in this case. It's easier to make mediocre, functional sprites in 8-bit, but difficult to make it great. The pixel art in this game is top notch.

Specter Knight shines to me personally.


And most people don't see the effort that goes into them. They just see NES and leave it at that.

Love this game. Takes all that's good about 8-bit Metroid-vania and honors it, while still managing to be it's own game.

the game is more megaman based the anything. metroid-vania kinda entails a open world with exploration. the stage select in this was more megaman esque. even the stages are beat this short level and get to the boss find a item on the way if you can.

not every 8-bit style game is metroid-vania style

It does take lots from MegaMan. But the magic system is straight out of Castlevania. Have to destroy things to get more magic power to use your items.

Not to mention the whole hidden secret aspect, that's a lot more Castlevania-y. Or Zelda-y.
