Neil Young's Cortez the Killer is easily my favourite rock song. It's paced perfectly and has a kind of proto-lo-fi ruggedness that I love dearly, it manages to extend several moody instrumental jams without seeming obnoxious. The instruments and vocals tie in together in a way that shouldn't be possible considering the barebones recording technology used on the album. Every subtle musical variation, every recording blemish seems to cue in almost immaculately with Young's brilliant portrait of Spanish conquest (which he wrote in high school, no less). I know it's kind of cliche to have a "dadrock" tune as one's favourite song, but oh well.

Though admittedly the song is more enjoyable when performed by artists who aren't Neil Young (see Built to Spill's 20 minute live rendition), even I can overcome my personal anti-Neil Young bias to give credit where credit is due.
