if it was so men and women can both easily enjoy the game and connect more to the protagonist then it would have a simple gender selection

it isn't used as a selling point... i think normal people probably just dont take much notice of it. i literally think i've only ever seen it actively brought up by people like you who want to shoehorn the horrible evil of "tumblr pandering" into every media outlet they can find lol
there's lots of reasons you might prefer as a developer to make your game have a player character that isn't of obvious gender instead of a boy/girl choice

like really - i get that knowing everything is your special personality trait but it's okay to not have an opinion on stuff you don't know very much about! this is a dev who literally asked the bigger youtube names to not be too eager in spreading the word about his game because he didnt want the whole internet talking about it to death, so i very much doubt these ulterior motives he apparently has.
