I'm awful at shading, so I'm trying to do some basic thumbnail icons for practicing basic spriting.

Double the size..

Any ideas on how to make it better? I'm probably just going to try the basic GBA design next.

Cheated and used a gradient to get an idea of how I should shade it. Expect an actual shaded version soon.

I'm not a "professional" spriter, but I would've shaded not with a gradient, but with a radial type shade toward the upper left of the screen

Dunno if that makes sense to you or not

other than that, the sprite is pretty cool, I feel like using it for something

But yes, you'd probably want a more rounded shading on the screen, something like the example I put, and probably try and shade the main body of it as well.

Too much pillow shading. And that screen look rounds, which isn't the case.

So, here is a quick tut...
With the picture of a Gameboy :

And a revamped sprite of a Gameboy (Keep it, it's a gift) :

When spriting, what you need the most is a light source :
(Mine is here)

It's where the light comes from. Darker parts will always be away from the light source, and lighter parts closer to it.
Here I actually shaded the grey part around the screen (And turned that damn Gameboy on :3) :

Now magic happens, and life was given to this GB, still following the same basic mechanics. I maybe gave it a bit too much details in the lettering and the screen and all <<' :

I threw this together in 2 minutes to give to Det, and I honestly might as well fix up everything to turn it into a good sprite.

Right now my main issue is the palette for shading, to be perfectly honest. Any ideas?
