I only just started listening yesterday but I'm amazed. I've heard Octovarium and Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.

I don't care much for their music generally but I f*** love the 2nd disc of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
There doesn't seem to be much music dealing with mental diseases so I respect that a lot

I gave it a listen, it was great! Reminded me of Pink Floyd.

anyway yeah my worthless elitist onion:
DT is one of those bands that seems super impressive when you first get into more """"progressive""" music due to their sheer amount of technical skill but after listening to them for a certain length of time it becomes apparent just how incapable they are of decent songwriting. you'd think a group of 5 old guys with decades worth of experience in the music industry would at least have a general grasp on how to put ideas together, but their material only seems to get more disjointed as their career goes on. also their lyrics are so bad it hurts but nobody listens to prog rock for the lyrics
they have some cool tunes in between their 20 minute meandering jam sessions I guess but I see them as more of a gateway band than anything
gimme brvtal moshcore breakdowns over crazy guitar solos any day

I agree with Esper generally but I can still get behind some of their music
Although most of that music tends to be stuff I heard when I was first getting into prog rock/metal, so I suspect there's a lot of nostalgia to it

I saw them live, they were phenom..
Bigelf and Scale the Summit opened for them for the Prog Nation tour 2010...
And then DT opens for Zappa plays Zappa, which was truly an experience within itself. I'm glad my father and I were able to see such an amazing lineup.
Oh yeah, after Mike Portnoy left they should have all disbanded, their recent releases were garbage, so much so I didn't listen to any of it(Portnoy fanboiism)

I like them. Can someone recommend something that will give me a good explanation as to why mangini and portnoy are considered such ridiculously good drummers?

Listened to their self-titled album, yeah I like Mangini better. First 4 minutes or so really show it but I like the whole track And here's Mangini
