I would like to ask for suggestions on what game engine is easy to code for games. coding-wise, I have basic knowledge in C (yes the C, not C#, not C++), basic Java (not for gaming), mugen (but I might get bored). I am a sprite ripper btw (or at least has experience in ripping) http://spritedatabase.net/contributor/393^that is me I would like something that can have possibly moving up down left right and platforms, etc aside from fighting. I heard about something called openbor. I have no idea where I can look for tutorials. I googled it but nothing I understand well came up in search. so I would like to ask for suggestions for other game engines, or links to open bor. thanks

Well besides those, there is flash which is used for SSF2, there's Gamemaker (dont know much about it though), and I think visual basic can make something like what you're looking for as well.
There are flash tuts EVERYWHERE on the net, and as for the other two, you can find them on youtube.

There's always the Source and Unreal3 engines but I think that's a bit much for just sprite-based games.

GameMaker provides tutorials for making basic platformers on its website.

If you're looking for Platformers, i think Game Maker stands out clearly as the best option as a game engine.

Game maker also has an elaborate scripting language once you graduate from the drag and drop.

If you want to actually learn to code games just suck it up and learn c++, it's not actually that hard if you have coding experience
If you don't want to actually learn to code games use game maker or whatever

Gamemaker Studio Is best for any 2d game with a very flexible syntax and is pretty good with networking (though if you try multiplayer with more than 32 people, make a server using c++), if you want to go a longer route pick unity as it can make any game you so desire but will take a bit longer to learn.

I recommend c#. It's extremely close to java only more game based. People would disagree but I love it. (XNA is nice)
