Saki Miyanaga, a high school first-year student, hates mahjong because her family would always force her to play it and punish her regardless of if she won or lost. Due to this, she learned how to keep her score at zero, neither winning nor losing. However, her friend Kyōtarō from middle school convinces her to join the school's mahjong club upon entering into high school. After the club discovers her ability, they recruit her and convince her to win instead of breaking even. She easily does so with her skill, leading the team to enter a mahjong tournament so that its members may reach the national competitions.
It seems promising so far but it only has 5 episodes so far. Note that I'm only watching it because my favourite voice actor is in it. Kana Ueda. She has voiced the main character in Gakuen Alice and Hayate in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's. She usually teams up with Rie Kugimiya who usually voices the main characters best friend. Most, if not all the anime she's in have been top notch so far!

Here's the Saki trailer. Enjoy! Saki is an extremely new anime. It only began in April this year and the manga only has 5 volumes. There are only 5 Saki episodes too. ;_;

I dunno... I don't think an anime based off of a not very exciting game will last very long.

Well if you're playing Mahjong without something to win or lose, then you're not really playing. All the fun, excitement and tension comes from the stakes involved.

Isn't that true about most board games? Why couldn't it be based off of, say, any sport that has action involved?
How long do they think viewers can watch people put down plastic rectangular prisms before they switch to something else?

But that actually has action in it.
Like, big monsters that beat the crap out of other big monsters.
But mah-jong?

This looks rrreeeeaaaallllyyyy similar to another anime I watched that centered around a Mahjong playing mute girl. The premise was utterly stupid. Her family was murdered in front of her eyes and she lost her ability to speak, but it gave her the innate skill of playing Mahjong exceptionally well. Why? Why Mahjong? Why was her family murdered? Why the hell did they take the game so seriously?
Why does Yu-Gi-Oh exist!?

Ewww Yu-gi-oh. The only reason I'm watching this is because the plot is well written and I am mildly interested in playing Mahjong. I would've bought Vista just because it had mahjong on it, but then I found it was the "westernized" version which took no skill at all.

The only reason I might check this out is because I play Mahjong.

It's probably not centered around Mahjong, but the issues that come with having that skill.
