My friend gave me his old graphics card(nvidia 9500) because he got a new one but my computer refuses to recognize it. I have no idea whats up.

At the start up screen my computer says its there but then any time past that it only refer sto my built in one. Thanks for being such a BIG help.

Not helpful and I would warn you for insolence and ignorance but I can't twist the rules to do so just yet.

Back to the issue at hand. Did you install the drivers for it? Drivers allow the computer to interface with hardware. Check the nVidia website to get the latest ones.

Since I'm using the 9500 I assume the 9 series would be the way to go but my computer says that it can't use the driver. And I reinstalled Direct x every time.

For a stab in the dark, I'd guess a BIOS issue or it's just incompatible with your motherboard.
That's just a guess, though. Don't go flashing your BIOS or anything. >__>

Even I have driver issues and a few hard resets, brute force methods, multiple installations and whatnot later it works. Keep in mind that my Motherboard is still in good shape. Dunno about the video card themselves really.
