So I saw it, and it wasn't too bad. It was decent. There, I said it.
It wasn't the best movie ever, and definitely not the worst (Dead or Alive takes that honor) - if anything, it was moreso a generic action flick with some karate moves.
The one thing about this movie is that it takes place BEFORE the first Street Fighter tournament - even before Alpha - so it really doesn't interfere with Street Fighter canon.
Well, yes it does.
-If it takes place where it should, it would be in the 70's (as Alpha takes place around the early 80's)...but everything seems to be taking place in a modern-age Bangkok. what
-Bison doesn't have the psycho power. Instead he's just got mad skills.
-There IS a spinning bird kick, the lightning leg, and the Kaioken - unfortunately none of them resemble their SF2 counterparts but that's OK. This is BEFORE Chun-Li entered the SF tournaments (which is also the reason she doesn't wear a quipao at all during the movie. This all takes place BEFORE joining Interpol)
~Most of these moves you won't pick up unless you're a fan of the StreetFighter games.
-Charlie is in the movie...He's an Interpol agent, not yet in the special forces.
SPOILERS LOL DON'T READ THIS UNTIL AFTER YOU SEE THE MOVIE
-
Rose is rewritten to be Bison's daughter...and uh, in the story, Rose is supposedly the lovechild of Bison and his wife. However, Bison takes his wife to some magical cave and using the magic of pressure points, EXPUNGES Rose from the fetus while at the same time investing all of his goodwill and "purity" into her (???) I had no problem with this.-
Vega's...not really killed off but "roughed up", Balrog's face is melted off by Gen, and Chun-Li snaps Bison's neck with her feet [supposedly a parallel to him killing Chun-Li's father in front of her eyes while both are tied up] If this actually happened, the SF2 tournament would have never happened....and Sagat doesn't appear...but...-
Gen has this habit of...not dying. Twice. At the end of the movie he shows her an ad for a tournament being held by Shadaloo, the STREET FIGHTER tournament. And there's clamor of this Japanese fighter, a "Ryu....something" who's making all the commotion. This actually is a way of teasing the idea of a movie based on SF1 done right - which is why Sagat didn't show up in this movie at all.Final thoughts:
I'm glad she didn't wear her quipao or do her hovering Spinning Bird Kick. That would have made the movie really, really campy and incredibly dumb.
This movie takes place like WAY before the games, so it doesn't really tie in to any of them. It's nice because it explains Chun-Li's past; however it retcons the entire Alpha series though
Fight scenes are intense as f***. Don't expect any trademark Chun-Li moves or else you'll be dissapointed.
If you think of the movie as an action film
based on the game characters with similar backstories or something, you'll come to enjoy the movie a lot more.
If they made an SF film based on Cammy's history, there is
no way they could possibly screw it up, because all the wire-stunts would look sexy as hell.
