after i've played xillia 2 the plot is really dreadful but i dunno if that's an unpopular opinion nowadays

yeah, it's horrendous and is clearly written with the sole purpose of having an edgy story

at least the gameplay's fun

well, you said that l-canceling doesn't add any depth to the meta of any games that have it

and that's really laughable LMAO

but it still requires more skill than smash 4

wow you can press a button slightly before you land to reduce animation time, this is SUCH A DEEP SYSTEM

its a joke to people because people belittle themselves for the games they play in the community

thats going off topic from my point, and quite frankly its pretty ignorant to speak what you dont really understand
also, since you wanna get technical about considerable depth
its any time before the 6th frame of the landing animation

it opens a plethora of options outside of just bait and punish
instant djc dair with ness is 9 frames
the move is -2 on block if you l-cancel and -7 if you dont
if you dont l-cancel the move youre going to get punished with a shield grab or a standard grab

so again, tell me how it doesnt add depth to the game?
its amusing how you guys are going about pressing a button isnt adding any depth

so let me propose to you this:

lets say the special button was removed from smash entirely
would the game still have a considerable amount of depth?
the answer is no. the option to l-cancel solely exists for people who dont want to get punished by idiotic nonsense.
removing a button is literally removing an option. the option to l-cancel in any game should be taken into consideration.

If there is never any reason to not L-cancel, there's no f*** depth at all added from having it there

Everybody who wants to play competetively will learn how to do it and do it all the time. It'll become automatic.

How is that adding depth in any way?

well, you just spouted the ignorant opinion held by many who dont understand the mechanics of the game

im simply pointing out that its the same difference
you seem to be getting a little hostile

and the subject isnt "automatic". theres such a thing as flubbing inputs, inaccuracy, playing like s***. what youre proposing is that people who put time and effort in learning this are robots who wont miss a single l-cancel while playing a game.

its similar to dropping combos and block strings in traditional 2d fighters. also, you should really consider reading the example i gave you. most standard grabs in smash are 7-8 frames.

and theres plenty room for application. what im getting from this is adding an extra button to anything isnt going to add depth whatsoever, which in fact is clearly false.

edit: look, if you had said its semi-bad game design, i would probably agree with you
but saying that it doesnt add depth alone is exaggerating a little too much

also, since i dont care about getting warned for a double post,

multihitting aerials on block are extremely awful. for ness' case, fair on block w/ l-cancel is -6.
with l-cancel you still dont get frame advantage. its better to rising fair because its stupidly safe on block.
so that again trumps your beliefs on always using l-cancel in xy situation.

as a matter of fact, any aerial on block that isnt safe (0) or frame adv will get punished unless certain circumstances come into play.
