That being said, would it still be hype if it got put in some high-profile tournament? The game is pretty intense if people just want to get the best fights out of it.

once again, competitive play exists to be competitive

not to give you something nice to watch

Playing games for the sake of competition can't be hype? Isn't that why people watch others compete? Because watching people compete at something that they're comepetitive at is entertaining?

Again, not saying anything I question is a suggestion here. Just asking if by some snowball's chance in hell SSB64 made it to something like or *lesser* than EVO or something, would the overall perception of it change?

sighHonestly, I have no idea what you're on about this time.

I'll just drop it because I already have a good enough idea and I think it would be better to stay satisfied with that than debate yet another question of mine on a forum topic. There's better things to go blue in the face about. Or dicsuss politely.

Plus there aren't very many Smash 64 players that are of his caliber of play. Superboomfan and a few Japanese Smash 64 players come close, but they aren't a level of where they can sandbag an entire tournament and consistently place top 8.

No, the game is super dull and campy when people play to win. Punishes are much too severe due to the game's lack of DI, and the punishes themselves also get pretty boring as a result. Here's an example of what it looks like when two players play to win:
YouTube Video:

Thank god most people don't play to win in 64 tournaments, because that's what makes the game watchable.

Wow. No wonder people don't take it seriously. I mean, I personally think a lot of play-to-win tactics are dickish at times, cowardly and hard to watch without losing interest, but this takes it to another level.
And yet that's how a lot of games are played on the comptitive level. Just at lesser extremes compared to this.

Competitive 64 had a completely different meaning before I saw that, man.

I see your point now.

I'm going to ask Soft if he is going to EVO this year. I still can't believe the guy who took 7th in Melee at apex this year goes to my college and I'm just found out about this.

Keep in mind, that most rulesets ban that stage now, and in Japan only Dreamland is legal (quite a few rulsets now also only use Dreamland).

In regards to "playing to win" being "cowardly", if you're losing to it, then its your fault. Lets look at a game like Street Fighter; Lets say a Ryu player at a tournament always tosses a fireball to make you jump, then anti-airs you with a light dragon punch. On paper, you see the basic pattern, but you keep losing to it. Is the Ryu player supposed to say "ok, I'll use another tactic to give you a better chance of beating me"? No, he's supposed to keep doing what's working because the opponent doesn't know how to stop it. In any fighting game you play, that's how people win at any level (competitive or not). They do things that the opponent fails to stop.

I emphasized "personally" because the way competitive fighting games progress in terms of tactics and counters to those gets more and more and more boring to me as the game progresses. I'm always more satisfied doling out punches even if it means I have to take a lot of my own, but patience and spacing games are NOT my strong suit. If I conform to it, which I don't do much anymore, it means I have to play to win because my opponent is, and playing to win sucks the fun out of a looooooot of things. I guess seriousness comes at a cost. Untamed, reckless fighting will eventually turn into space-controlling, bait-and-punish fighting when it gets competitive, it seems.
Thanks for the Street Fighter example, though. I actually went through a lot of that in my early days.

I only utilized derogatory words like "cowardly" and "dickish" because I still have a lot of those scrubby thought patterns and from what I would call the "outside" it looks a lot like fear of loss overcomes desire to win. This is where I used to assume that camping and ledge-hogging came from. Something that I still do is force my opponent to move by being aggressive if the fight gets boring and I usually let them grab the ledge so that we can keep fighting. And subsequently, when I lose it's because they don't extend to me that same hospitality. Which is fine by me at this point, because I'd assume that it's what makes me stand out, if anything else. Because if I did play to win as much as other people, I don't think I'd lose much, but neither would I enjoy it.
Bleh. Maybe I my whole mentality is anti-competitive, huh?
