Wow! this topic has gone through two months without any posts. I guess it's due the lack of stuff regarding the Mario platformers right? well not so long ago Wii U Daily posted that Nintendo is already developing a new Mario platform game, and I guess it is scheduled for a 2015 release:

or there's always the possibility of just making a good game without having to have a central gimmick to build it around

Well yeah, but that seems like thats all they're doing these days, so its a possibility for them to do it. Doesnt mean its a good idea though. I was just refuting the idea that the only other concept they could do after space travel was time travel.

time travel would be a neat theme gimmick for a 64-style successor though

What kind of time period settings would they use though? Real world time periods would likely look too out of place for a Mario game, and at least using Yoshi's Island as a reference (since it doesnt look to much different), I cant imagine the world of Mario changing all that much past or future.

too real-life for mario imo and even though that'd lead to varied levels they'd still be constrained by having to be in time periods

and they're not struggling for fresh level ideas, playing 3D World alone should tell you that

oh definitely 3D World's level design was stellar

I think it could work but it's probably not likely to happen
