just curious, is this place like tsr for people who can't stand tsr
never even heard of it

Never really touched tsr, so no real basis to go off of, but it's a bunch of spriters who'll critique the absolute hell out of whatever you post and occasionally remake it to their liking. It's a great learning experience, cause it seems they all know about putting extra oomph into animations and are all kung fu experts or something so they know how to hit.

Compare:

The main thing I've learning is that I put in too many unnecessary frames that could be replaced with blur or straight motion.

The second one looks a lot more realistic and smoother. Great job, keep it up

The second is one of their edits, it was just the best example I had. The lesson stays the same though, work on the effect of motion per frames.

Not sure that's what the edit is though. Don't give him that much credit. Most of the reason for it looking the way it does is the frame delay he added, which you don't use. Your animation could look like that if the timing was changed. I don't think it has to do with the amount of frames exactly.

It's a lot of things. I've put a couple of animations there and the critique kept coming back to timing and motion per frames depending on what it was. A couple were described as "Too Disney, not enough Trigger," ie way too many unnecessary frames, and not enough holding back in between frames.

You can look back at any of the topics I made and see the conversations.

Another example of both, the second having better timing and less unnecessary frames.

Not sure I agree. It's very stylistic, and I think you're getting critique from a bunch of squares. The second animation has some things that are better, like the arms reaching farther back and the legs on the first punch, but I think it would look better with the smoothness of the first animation. I think how butter smooth your animations are is very stylistic. They'd look smooth even if they were slowed down to half speed. You can't say that about their examples, they're just playing them quickly and removing frames. If you however used your smooth animation style in a 60fps game it would blow their examples out of the water. You have to consider what the sprites are for. If they're for fun, use your own style and don't let some random lames on the internet tear into your personal flair. If it's for something like smash flash, fine because that's the quality standard. If it's for your own thing, see my first answer.

I just hate more than anything when someone has a cool unique style and people critique them incorrectly. They try to get them to animate how they animate., or draw how they draw instead of feeding what makes their style unique and help to bloom that.

I think at this point it's up to preference. I still have my style, but they still have a lot of pointers and things to say that I agree with. That's why I explicitly said that the one the other guy made was his, because it wasn't mine. My style is still my style.

Also, in a weird roundabout way, these are for SSF2. The idea was specifically to make animations that would be used if he became a character, hence the entrance and combo, as the checklist starts with those. Long term planning for if expansions ever come back, but still for practice either way.

TLDR; regardless of whatever happens, I'm still improving animation, and I'm keeping what makes stuff mine.

You raise a good point;

Part of your 'identity' as an artist comes from how you interpret feedback and what sort of feedback you accept. You have a clear goal for yourself, and you and you alone decide what sort of feedback you find useful for that specific goal. You're doing a good job at that.

I do agree with what Ramsey says though. Especially the 'disney and trigger' comment made no sense; Disney (most american animation in general) is known for rubbery, stretchy animation and not an overusage of frames. If anything it's 'studio ghibli vs trigger' in the sense of 'calm, smooth controlled movement vs faster-paced forceful animation', at least in my opinion.

Re: Your stuff; what continues to amaze me is how well you can read the details on your work while you opt not to make use of complex shades or outlines and stuff. I feel like it gives a nice, colourful flair to your work that I have only seen in digital art and not in pixel animation.

Originally intended to be a redo of Image, but then I decided to just freehand it instead of copying an already traced sprite.

More of Maki, with the design for a theoretical 'second arc' included. Included is a tattoo that can be made to look like whatever and a Strider inspired laser scarf to fill the gap of her changing her ponytail.

I've had these done for like two or three weeks and never uploaded them. Anyway, the redos of my Matthew Mercer swordsman trifusions, which I never bothered to finish, so I went ahead and just designed it.

ImageImage And a minor design after I heard the term "Neon Night Riders," a stage from TMNT: Turtles in Time. Made a quick game idea before I realized that it was just Tron, but I really like the design.

Looks very good, your skill in that style is pretty good, I'd advise branching out to other styles though.

It's a combination of Chrom and another character, so you're not wrong.

I'm almost out of stuff I'm looking to redo, and some I may end up making more like the Cole animations. Either way, these are just fun in betweens while I make full animations to keep from doing nothing.

Trifusions are the different combinations of three different characters, so yeah. The ones I used are No More Heroes' Skelter Helter, Fire Emblem: Awakening's Chrom, and Attack on Titan's Levi, cause they are all swordsman voiced by Matthew Mercer.

So today's actually my birthday, so I decided a decent way to celebrate was to update my avatar. It's admittedly just an full size of my old one, but still feels like it was time to change.
