I'd like to provide elaboration on what the tiers mean here.

The first thing you should notice about this tier list is that there is no S tier o K tier. This is because we felt that there were no characters that overly dominated the meta to the point where there is almost no reason to play any other characters. Since even the least powerful character in SSF2 is viable at the moment, then we felt that the best way to describe this is to also exclude a tier for the "unviable" characters.

The A+ tier contains 5 characters that have displayed high character potential, are a powerful force in the meta, and they have good matchups across the board that make them very desirable picks and the best choices for a tournament.

The A tier only contains Fox, which might seem a little weird, but I'll explain. A+/A/A- are all in the same general category of viability, in that they have good matchups across the board and can solo a tournament will good success. Fox demonstrates a level of power that the characters below him lack, but at the same time loses to most/all of the character above him, even if by a little. Thus, he doesn't truly belong in the A+ tier, but he doesn't belong with the other characters in his same tier, and he was split into his own tier to reflect this.

The A- tier represents the rest of the totally solo viable for tournament play. They are not as strong a pick as the upper 6 characters, but you can expect good success if you use them.

The B+/B/B- tier represents characters that are generally considered viable for tournament, and a capable player can succeed with them (particularly those in the B+ category), but they might have a couple of bad matchups against prevalent characters in the meta that reduce their impact. So, the characters in B+ are just on the cusp of the A- tier, and are almost in the same category of viability.

The B tier contains characters that are slightly less viable for tournament play. Solo mains can still do well, but they will have to combat numerous hard matchups against high tiers in order to do so. Having a secondary for these bad matchups is not necessary, but not uncommon.

The B- tier is the edge of the "barely solo viable" section. Once again, competent players can perform well with these characters but they are held back by some disadvantages. There is a significant drop in popularity of use in this tier and below.

The C+ tier contains characters that are considered to be heavily disadvantaged in the meta, and while a very skilled player can do well, it is almost a given that you need a secondary for certain matchups. That said, these characters have a few abilities that bring them to the very tip of "solo viable".

The C tier is the bottom of the roster's viability. It has been shown that they can do well, but only in very capable hands. These characters are held back in significant ways, but they are still tournament viable. That is the point this list wishes to stress the most. Wario, Sonic, and Sora might be at the bottom of the list, but at this point they are not considered negligible.

How did you come to these conclusions? Tournament results, the overall quality of the character (ex: Shiek's f-air, DK nonsense, etc...), or something else?

To those confused, this wasn't made in the regular SSF2 slack. This was made in a private slack that was invite only.



Tournament results, movesets, individual MU charts. When opinions/conclusions were split, debates over a duration of a few days each were done. We also revised the list around 3 times in order to make it as accurate as possible.
