Cruelty is driven by the strong hostility towards another, and must be kept stable by dominance over them. As said by a nameless stranger in May, “I have more faith than Jimmy Hadden than anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the players. Jimmy Hadden is dedicated his to his motives, and how truly powerful he, as an authoritarian figure, is. Jimmy Hadden himself, is a strong person, gaining the trust of millions of players, and successfully brutally tortured and killed over 5.4 million players during his time as dictator. The players are unable to retaliate under the cruel pressure of McLeodGaming's motivated hate.

Back to the novel, “May”, Thirteen year old player, Monte, was captured by the Devs and separated with from his most of his family. At the camp, he is . At the end of the experience, his view of the community has changed. As stated in the last passage of the book, “From the depths of the mirror, a picture of Beta Tails gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me”. Though Monte had survived the Beta Delay, he was morally dead. His soul crushed, by the pain and cruelty he had experienced in the Beta Delay.
