Quote:
‘‘Hikikomori,’’ a word that has come into common usage in Japan in recent years to signify the abnormal avoidance of social contact, especially by adolescent males, has found its way into the third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English published Thursday. The word is one of more than 2,000 new entries in the dictionary, whose first edition was published in 1998, according to Oxford University Press, the dictionary’s publisher.

The vuvuzela, the plastic horn used to cheer teams during the soccer World Cup in South Africa earlier this year, also won an entry in the latest edition. Other new entries include ‘‘bromance,’’ a close but non-sexual relationship between two or more men, and ‘‘staycation,’’ a holiday or holidays spent in one’s home country without going abroad.

The second edition of the dictionary added such Japanese words as ‘‘otaku,’’ meaning fanboy or geekhead, and ‘‘karoshi’’ for death from overwork.

More likely than you think.

Well, every language is always borrowing words from each other, is it's not a surprise.

I'm just surprised they added Hikikomori right. Well, I guess the word has been used more often than say, last year.

In fact, I don't remember a single instance of the word being used last year, in my life, outside of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei.

That's why languages borrow words, because they don't have a word for it. I mean look at words like cafe that Americans borrow from French. English just say "Coffee shop" but Americans are to say another six letters let alone another word.

Asocial.

I mean, I've heard vuvuzela, and otaku, but who the f*** except Japan-obsessed people would use 'karoshi', unless they're playing the flash game? And I've never even heard of "Hikikomori" before today... It's getting a bit ridiculous.

Someone actually used "hikkikomori" in casual conversation with me less than a week ago.

Are you f***' serious? A good portion of this is (was) slang used exclusively on the internet. Thirty years ago these kinds of additions wouldn't even be considered, which shows we've lost our stubborn grammarians- partially explaining how much of the English language has gone down the s***.

p.s blow vuvuzela

Bromance is a gay word.

And seriously, like Kyzak said, the dictionary usually has words that you would like to use on your English paper.

Go ahead, use bromance on your Master Thesis on British Literature.
Whoops, you f*** up your chance to get an M.A.
