Can playing "Madden" or "World
of Warcraft" encourage your kid to be
more engaged in public life? Believe
it or not, yes.

What's Madden supposed to teach a kid? How to sit on his a** instead of playing the real thing? How to waste money? How to play a sport?
They could have learned that sooner if they picked up the ball instead of the game. :hmph:

Your kid is not destined to become an anti-social hermit who lives at home until he’s 35.

Ya we are.
Quote:
If high-school social studies are but a distant memory, a quick refresher: Anything that has to do with engaging in public life qualifies as a civic activity.

High School doesn't have Social Studies classes, that's Middle School. And most games aren't online, so engaging in public life...?
Quote:
Video games can provide hands-on learning opportunities for kids that can be much more meaningful than reading a textbook. For instance, you can play a mayor in “SimCity,” and get a close-up look at what it takes to build and maintain a community.

No, it teaches kids to look up cheat codes to help maintain your city. Well... actually, that makes sense, the economy can't run without cheat codes :wee:

Going online is asking for the stuff... just like going into a bad area in south L.A.
Quote:
One commonly held stereotype paints teenage gamers as solitary, anti-social s**** dwellers that can't socialize their way out of a paper bag. But Lenhart says their research ran counter to this notion. For the vast majority of the kids polled, games are a social experience, where they get to interact with their friends. Some kids play with other people in the room, and some play online. But regardless, teenagers view games as something they do with other people, and not just something they do when they’re alone.

Not really a majority of the time playing games is actually alone or online, and online is practically alone or with someone you want to shoot at.

lol...

It teaches you the basics of capitalism! You pay for whores and weapons. You can even get your money back if you kill the whores. Then you make money performing deeds for other people.
