i dunno much about jazz. entry level doesn't mean bad though obv

god knows Master of Puppets is entry level as it gets but I still think it's a kickass metal record

Album 4, 10th Nov: Gapfield - Gapfield Summer
Electronic / Drone / I don't know electronic genres, there's a lot of bass

I've been listening to a lot of music from the Energostatic Netlabel, lately.
It's a nice label, since they basically just post lots of ambient and drone stuff, for free.

I decided I'd review one of the many albums they've released, because I've still got a lot to get through.
So, I chose this one, because the album art is cool.

Like all the others, click the album art to listen to the album.

I didn't spend very long on this review, because I didn't plan it at all.

There's 4 tracks, and each one goes for about 6 minutes.

The first song, "It Vanished", was pretty fantastic. It was mostly drone, and the atmosphere was great.

Though, the second one, "Warm Breeze", was my least favourite on the whole thing. Which was disappointing, considering the name set itself up to be the best one. It had a constant and loud bass beat, which isn't really my thing. If it's your thing, you'll probably like it more than I did.

Third track, "Gapfield Summer", was okay, too, but for a title track, it was nothing special.

And then the final track, "Starlit Shore". As it goes on, a drum plays every now and then, which works well. It's probably my second favourite. I definitely enjoyed it way more than Gapfield Summer and Warm Breeze, but It Vanished is still better.

It was okay, I guess, I'd listen to it again, as background music. But I'd much rather listen to other releases from the same label.

i've heard that a lot of places though, like anywhere i've talked about jazz music miles davis and john coltrane are considered to be entry level. i can see where they're coming from with davis but coltrane is pretty complicated s***

idk who would say that about coltrane aside from someone who calls anything tonal entry-level

davis is easy to digest but he does a lot of complicated stuff too

I feel like term is on the money re: entry level doesn't really speak to quality. Most all of my favorite artists in any form are able to distill whatever they do into something simple and widely relatable

yeah, a lot of the time "baby's first" are actually one of the best in their respective genre/style. godspeed you! black emperor are pretty widely known as the most entry-level post rock group but they're still my favorite

Septic Flesh - Mystic Places Of Dawn

I really don't know why I added this album, it's some metal record from '94, I could have very well listened to this band's new 2014 album, but I picked this, no idea why, honestly. The production is clear, but thin, the instrumentation is basic whatever metal, and the vocals. Oh god the vocals. It's beyond f***.

So this album gets a 3/10 because it's just prehistoric.

They are also commonly referred to as the best post-rock act, too.

Which makes sense, considering that they don't have a bad album.

Blue Version by The Speed of Sound in Seawater
Preview: You Bite Down

I don't really dislike anything about these guys, but they really don't do much for me. It's basically prog rock/metal with "just stick that anywhere" songwriting, some moments that sound kind of Animals as Leaders-esque and those kind of gay/feminine/emo/whatever the f*** word i'm looking for vocals. That probably doesn't sound too bad and I guess it isn't but the whole thing is just really uninteresting to me. Idk, just not doing anything for me. Sorry Nyx

Stevie Wonder - Talking Book

Stevie Wonder rules, I like his album "Innervisions". Really cool soul/funk tunes. He also sings beautifully and his lyrics range from slightly corny to induce smiling to genuinely heart warming. Talking Book was pretty similar to Innervisions, lots of funky jams to dance to while Stevie sings about love. I was really looking forward to giving this album a listen and I wasn't disappointed at all! I liked Stevie's songwriting a whole lot and I enjoyed how groovy the entire record was.

6-7/10. I honestly enjoyed most of the tracks on this LP, and it's tough to pick 3 favorites. I didn't dislike a single track. It was all nice.

Blue Swede - Hooked on a Feeling

I kind of added this album as a joke, knowing full well that I don't enjoy Blue Swede's famous song sharing the same name as the album. I figured that maybe I'd enjoy the rest of the album if I gave it a shot. I didn't really like it all that much.
Sure, there are a couple of nice poppy moments on the album and I can absolutely see the appeal to this kind of 70's love song pop music. Sure. I just didn't personally like most of the LP. A few songs were okay but a few were also kind of annoying after a while (Silly Milly and Working in the Coal Mines come to mind). Overall it's alright, I guess. Not my thing but it wasn't horrific or anything.

4/10. I liked Gotta Have Your Love. Everything else was either average or annoying.

Pchoo.
