SAN FRANCISCO - Like alcohol and tobacco, sugar is a toxic, addictive substance that should be highly regulated with taxes, laws on where and to whom it can be advertised, and even age-restricted sales, a team of scientists contends.

Quote:
In a paper published in Nature on Wednesday, the University of California, San Francisco
researchers argue that increased global consumption of sugar is primarily responsible for a whole range of chronic diseases that are reaching epidemic levels around the world.

"The only method for dealing with this is a public-health intervention," Lustig said in an interview.
"Everyone talks about personal responsibility, and that won't work here, as it won't for any addictive substance.
These are things that have to be done at a governmental level."

Quote:
It's going to require public policy that gently guides people toward healthier choices and uses brute force to
remove sugar from many processed foods, said Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist at UCSF.

What's funny is that on my lap is a printed case study of why protectionist US sugar subsidies and import tariffs harm the global sugar producers.

if a law passed saying beef had to taste like a** too, it would probably hurt global beef producers

I'm not an economics major so I won't contest that. Then again I wonder what it would be like if there were no protection for domestic markets. Countries race to offer minimum minimum wages?

national industries are a different story of course
the idea behind a tariff is that you bone the rest of the world to reassert industrial dominance within your country
tariffs are basically the only way to make global capitalism work
else everyone in the universe would work in a sweatshop except the dudes who own the sweatshop
