It's a great start man! You can use a free Gif software like 'Beneton' to remove the background. That's what I use anyway.

If you wanted to give it a more accurate 8-bit approach, it would help if you made the black on the sprite the same colour as your dark grey. Keep the palette simple.

Remember, Most of the NES sprites don't have more than 6 colors.

the article I read stated 2 things contradicting you thing. Mega man method allows you do have 6 colors by using 2 sprites as one sprite. and the different sprite sizes are 16x16 and 24x24.
