The meter bar, a staple of fighting games since the 90s, which has worked its way well into modern era fighting games. I won't spoil the details you already know, but what I will say is that a Final Smash Meter would be a great alternative for Smash Balls in competitive play. Of course, that wouldn't mean Smash Balls would be replaced as an item entirely; they could easily be used to fill out the meter to full, but still wouldn't be used in competitive play for obvious reasons.

Though here, we could all discuss the advantages and disadvantages to having these meters and even hold a poll gauging interest in these.

1. It still wouldn't be suitable for competitive play because of the natures of the Final Smashes themselves. They're not like Super attacks; they're deliberately overpowered mayhem, and balancing them to be otherwise would, in my eyes, completely defeat the point.

2. We're not Crusade, and I'd rather not have them accuse us of ripping them off.

First off, you shouldn't base the use of the meters in another fan game to determine whether or not the devs could use it in this game.

Secondly, saying that Super Attacks (or Ultimate moves or whatever) aren't deliberately overpowered mayhem is a lie. Super Moves, Ultimates and Final Smashes are the same, they're meant for big comeback potential. The only difference is that Final Smashes are just stock takers, which, technically speaking, could be no different from a Super Move or Ultimate being used in a game like Soul Calibur or Street Fighter. And hey, if you don't think it'd be suitable for competitive play, then how about the devs just nerf them universally, so that they do become competitively viable?

Nerfing them universally is exactly what I'm saying would defeat the point of even having them.

Some things just aren't meant to be competitively viable. And overpowered stage-wide chaos, such as casual players adore, is one of those. Nerfing that would disrupt the kind of play they enjoy.

tl;dr: There's a point where we have to draw the line. And that point is when we start interfering with how people other than us play the game.

There are Final Smashes that need to be nerfed anyways, since they're very unbalanced (Lloyd's Final Smash).

But this is getting off topic. Back to the whole usage of the "meter", the design of a meter is to balance out powerful moves like "Supers" in Street Fighter and "Ultimates" in a game like Overwatch. It'd be better for competitive play than a random ball flying around, and you know, the meter could be different for every character depending on which ones are the most powerful, akin to Overwatch. There's a balancing factor of the meters there; it'd easily prevent Final Smashes from being spammed and wouldn't disrupt normal competitive play too much. Heck, I can guarantee that a meter wouldn't even be bad for casual play at all.

But really, what are the biggest reasons you think that they wouldn't work? The meters? Any other reason than the first two?
