Well after coming back and seeing that ESRB leak was the final roster I can't say I am surprised

This time around Sakurai really worked hard to dial back the random element of the characters (what with DeDeDe only throwing Gordos, Olimar plucking Pikmin in a set order etc.) for more control over the metagame and balance, so I can kind of see that extending towards Ice Climbers, where you have a concept that partly depends on a variable AI (Nana getting back to Popo for example). Rosalina&Luma 'fix' said issue because Luma is remote control. Obviously I can't for certain that this is how it went down but this is what I think may have happened.

I think it was more that 8 characters weren't running well on the 3ds, considering that's something he talked about a while back.

Personally, I'd still be happy if it was just one Ice Climber with an altered moveset, but I doubt it'd happen because they're a popular team.

How to solve Ice Climbers being separate characters and randomness while still having them in.
Step 1: Tie them together using a rope like real climbers do.

Sure that might take away some of their playstyle uniqueness, but defiantly not their charm. There in no good reason to cut Ice Climbers, and honestly I think an explanation is an order.

In the Ice Climber Game you actually do play as only 1 Ice Climber, and Player 2 would join as the Second. So that isn't actually to farfetched.

it takes away the whole gimmick of ice climbers though
you might as well remove shulk's monado changes and robin's item uses

I'd rather lose that one gimmick than the characters. They would still be the only character to Freeze things and be unaffected by icy floors (by default). I might be grumpy, but I could understand rebalancing them in a way that didn't mean a crappy period of no recovery after the 1st time you use it and kill your sister.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't actually think there are any ice floors in the game

Removing the character's gimmick would make the Sm4sh Ice Climber a hollow shell of the former version. It wouldn't include the things that made people love them. It'd be more disappointing than not having them at all for most people, I think.
