it's called Veteran's Day in the US, and yes it is a holiday. a national holiday at that.

World War I was a war during which our side made gargantuan efforts to move their drinks cabinets 6 inches closer to Berlin by sacrificing, what, a few thousand men a day?

Lest we forget, it's also the war in which our side claimed we couldn't lose the war, because the Germans would run out of young men to send into battle before we did.
