In summer, there are cicadas in Japan. Since its the end of summer, there HAS to be a connection. In the book, my fuzzy memory recalls that they decided to do their summer homework together because that was what was causing Haruhi to repeat the summer. She doesn't want it to end because she didn't do the homework.

They're in the cafe or some such thinking as to why Haruhi would have regrets and hence does not want to have summer end. Someone mentioned homework and then Kyon was like "OH CRAP I DIDN'T DO MY HOMEWORK YET" then everyone is liek, "ZOMG I BET HARUHI DIDN'T EITHER!" At least that is what I recall.

I highly doubt Kyon would ever go into a deep relationship with Itsuki, even though Itsuki keeps coming onto Kyon and getting close to his face. It's not just the controversy, it's the fact that it wouldn't make sense. If they really do into a relationship, then Haruhi would be pissed and the universe would be destroyed.
