I think the problem most people have with anime fighters, or rather, Arcsys fighters (same thing really), is that they usually feature too many complicated mechanics and subsystems.

Thats a huge turnoff for me, honestly. I think that in a well designed fighting game character playstyles can be balanced without resorting to additional systems and mechanics into the game

the principle of here being: fighting games are beter off with restriction to variables.

To be serious for a moment, a good fighting game needs to start with a good fighting system. You don't want it to just be a simple button masher but at the same time, you don't want it to be completely inaccessible for new players.

You need to have some sort of defensive mechanics in place to allow players to escape a combo.

For starters, you need to make sure that overly strong combos aren't a thing.
All good fighting games at the very least have a damage scaling system in place that reduces damage dealt the longer a combo goes on. BlazBlue, for instance, gradually reduces both damage and hitstun to zero if a combo goes on long enough.

But that isn't enough: You also need to include some defensive mechanics. Most modern fighting games nowadays have some kind of defensive maneuvers. Killer Instinct has combo breakers, Mortal Kombat has breakers too, Injustice has ways to get out of the corner, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom has the Mega Crash, Street Fighter V has V-reversals, and Skullgirls has an entire system in place which--if it detects an infinite combo--allows the victim to force their opponent back with a single button press.

A good fighting game also needs variety in characters and movesets but they all need to be balanced properly because if you have a handful of characters that are blatantly better than all of the others, that variety will be a moot point. Of course, if you have a huge roster then perfect balance is extremely difficult if not impossible but you still need to make an effort to make it so that players can get solid results with any character.

You also to provide options for all kinds of fighting styles. A fighting game that only favors one playstyle is a terrible idea because it punishes other players for not using the one fighting style that it revolves around.

If you want some textbook examples of how NOT to make a fighting game, take a look at Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 or Soul Calibur V. The former suffers from terrible balance and no real way to escape combos; the latter makes rushing in and attacking the only viable strategy and actively punishes players for being defensive.

Honestly it's just really all a matter of preference, I've been seeing lately certain sub-categories of fighting games -- some with a lotta mechanics and others with...not so many. I feel like all modern day fighting games (or at least the big contenders) have all gotten to where they can be seen as "good", it just depends on what you want in your game. Airdashes and stuff? Arc Sys, crossovers, whatever. Hate all of that? Go with the tried and true. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and at times even KOF. I see that as like...in the middle.

But yeah, it's a matter of preference in my eyes.

if you enjoy mortal kombat hey more power to you man i hope youre happy

you can like something even if other people dont like it

what i was saying that from a standpoint that has no fighting game background it was pretty fun for them.
