They did nothing of value in the story. They went to Soul Society to save Rukia. They went to Hueco Mundo to save Orihime/ kill the Espadas. (Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not that far in to it.)

Don't ask me, I barely even cared for the show. I own 5 volumes because my friend said they were actually good. Biggest waste of money, that bastard ripped me off.
