Masked Man is NOT a less important character. He plays HEAVY impact on the story, where he is turned out to be
Lucas' Brother Claus. who has been killed and reconstructed and lucas has to KILL him at the end, giving a heart breaking ending.
4. Why do you use Castlevania and Contra as an example when I'm p. sure they aren't Nintendo games? Like, I know Metal Gear Solid and Sonic are both third-party, but..
Yeah. Those were just examples of retro, it could be any classic character really.
5. no anime no no no
Okay, I see why you wouldn't want it to be a "Jump Super Stars" clone
6. Mortal Kombat what

I don't even know what I was thinking.

Young Link is more like Link than Toon Link is. Although, I'd love a Masked Young Link which could switch between the forms..
Not really a stupid idea, they just used what they had at hand and it was matching with Fox. For all we know, they could go Sly Cooper and give Falco a cloaking device.
Lucas' brother Claus was important, but not to the point of Lucas, who was the main character. Therefore, less important. Kratos was important in Tales of Symphonia but not to the amount that Lloyd was.

I'll point out that some games did have characters included in the game before the main character (i.e. Richter in Tales of Vs.) but Nintendo has a much easier time when it comes to turning similar characters into different ones.

It's quite understandable why most people would go about that.

But the environment is not too different from that of a 2D fighting game.
Add platforms, physic-based controls, remove canonical 2D element features and add something different and you get this.

But as long as I can see Fox and Falco being different from each other significantly regardless of established moves in their arsenal being similar, it really doesn't matter to me.

Brawl is the only one without actual comboing. It's just more dynamic than in traditional fighters.

This.

Spontaneous comboing is still a form of comboing. As Tid said, more dynamic and represented effectively here than a majority of other games.

It's much more difficult to combo in brawl since the physics are floatier(?) than in previous installments not to mention that the hit box detection is much more precise and makes it harder to land hits.
