i never said anything about FE having only sword-wielding main characters. however
the truth of the matter is that most of the main characters' primary/iconic weapons are swords:
Robin defaults to a sword and tome and his promotion wields the same weapons. he's also from the most recent fire emblem and has an incredibly unique fighting style to boot; there's a reason why he made it over
CHROM, who WOULD have been just another regular old sword user.
Marth defaults to a sword, and an iconic sword at that (Falchion iirc?). he's also mr. fire emblem (which, as said before, has its damned icon as a SWORD) and having him use anything but swords would be really weird considering he himself reps the series
Lucina was intended to be an alt so i'm gonna leave her aside, but even then she uses
Falchion primarily, and spears are a secondary choice
Ike starts off exclusively using swords. i can't speak for his promotions or anything as i haven't played either of his games just yet, but even if he can use something else upon promotion, his primary weapon is Ragnell.
and now, look at almost every other main character. Sigurd's artwork has him holding a sword, Roy's main weapon is the sword of seals, both Eliwood and Lyn primarily use swords and are holding a sword in their artwork, Eirika starts off using swords, Leaf primarily uses swords, Alm primarily uses swords.. yeah.
now while, yes, the whole thing is true that a game that pushes using the right weapons in the weapon triangle is true, but there have only been, what, three main characters that don't use swords as a main weapon? Mica, Ephriam, and Hector.
Hector didn't even get his own trophy in Brawl or DLC in Awakening.
Ephriam is the same way.
Micaiah also didn't get her own trophy in Brawl.
Why include Mica when FE was obscure around anywhere but Japan as of the time (and let's not f*** around, it wasn't
that popular until Awakening), along with the fact Ike has been the protagonist in two games already, the most recent ones at that? He just happened to be more iconic of the current Fire Emblem games.
Marth is Mr. Fire Emblem, and as I said him using anything not iconic (LIKE THE SWORD USED AS THE SERIES' SYMBOL) would have been a hilariously bad move since he pretty much is the embodiment of Fire Emblem.
And now, Robin and Lucina. Both characters only appeared in one game, and you could argue that Robin isn't even the main protagonist of Awakening. But Awakening was one of the most successful games in the series, along with the fact that it was the most recent and Sakurai wanting to represent it gave it even more chances. It boiled down to Robin vs. Chrom.
He picked Robin, instead of giving us a fourth sword user. yeah yeah robin still uses swords but he uses tomes as well, unlike the other characters in the rep group. But guess what? He happened to use swords. I bet if Robin used lances and tomes as his primary weapons, he'd be in Smash right now with a tome and lance, I guarantee it.
I won't even bother arguing about Lucina, she's basically just a freebie and wasn't intended to be her own character.
i probably have a lot of contradictions in this argument or little holes in my logic but my mind is kinda foggy, so just ask/comment and i'll reply
