Okay.
Just a few:
Have you ever tried to sprite a character that you liked without tracing? If so, how did it turn out? Is there certain series of TV show/game/comic/anime/etc that you like character design wise? Who is your favorite spriter?
There isn't any wrong answer for any of these, and the answers will help will with my suggestions, so don't rush it. ^^

umm, to be honest you're the first spriter I liked, I'm not really sure, Most likely Detta Doodle, Reix, Steven, though Yes, HORRIBLE okay maybe not that bad, but its still bad, and its not 100% custom. the only ones I can answer. (hope I could help)

I'M the first spriter that you liked?! I-I'm blushing now lol. But the spriters that you listed, most notable Reix and me, all started out like you. In fact, I've only been spriting on and off for like 3 years lol. Reix is on the same as me as well since we were both learning at he same pace. Me and Reix mostly learned from tutorials and practiced, though Reix prolly had more time than me since like I said, I've been on and off. Here's what I suggest: If you wanna learn a current style, try to intimidate what you see in official sprites. Things like how they're shaded, the size, the colors, etc. Learning a current style and studying helps because you find common patterns of how the style is made, which can add a professional look to the sprite. There's also many tutorials here in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=39454 and others everywhere sprite related like dA. If you want I can show you my method, if you want to.

I-It's not like I like you or anything. Baka. But yeah, there was a lot of just staring at other things until they start to work together. Tracing is a pretty good way of starting out, but trying your own things is important if you want things to be a bit more unique. I still do a lot of tracing whenever I see something that I get an idea for, but I would advise working your way up from simpler styles if you want to get started on customs.

>implying i didnt start out with lackluster traces of smash brothers things it just seems that way because i started my spriting thread here when i had already been spriting for two years lol these were made just over two years apart. in those two years i did basically nothing but sprite. the majority of what i did in those two years was either editing or doing custom stuff off an existing base with heavy referencing (like when i did my rob sprites, i stared at the frames in brawlbox while i worked). it wasnt until a little over a year ago that i even attempted doing fully custom stuff. generally speaking, the three main methods of spriting around here are tracing, editing, and custom. to be honest, tracing shouldn't even be considered in the list but so many people are doing it that i guess it makes some difference. generally people start out by editing (that's what i did, for the most part). find something you wanna make, find a sprite that looks similar, and try editing it. editing sprites from published games gives you a general sense of how outlines, shading and palettes work because you're working with sprites that are already at their finest. once you've got a handle on editing and can make something look very different from the original, it's time to make an attempt at custom work. as far as custom stuff goes i can't really help with general stuff because it largely depends on the style you go for and what you're spriting. here's some stuff in a variety of styles if you wanna try editing something; these are mostly things i've tried editing in the past. http://www.spriters-resource.com/ds/nor ... index.htmlhttp://www.spriters-resource.com/ds/coropata/index.htmlhttp://www.spriters-resource.com/pc_com ... index.htmlhttp://www.spriters-resource.com/pc_computer/mikunpop/

I honestly like the simplistic shape of these characters, wish they were a bit more energetic, tho

Maybe take a look at this guy and see if you could incorporate some of his shading for your characters; If they are jelly, that is. Dunno if they're supposed to be more opaque of so. D'awww lease don't cry Green =C

There's something Strange with these animations, I think it's the lack of frames.
