http://simmons.edu/overview/about/news/press/1013.phpMaybe they just don't care about the study being conducted on them.

Except most people I've known who grew up on videogames are pretty empathetic.

There's no denying that yes, violent video games can lead to an impact to empathy/sympathy, but I don't think it's a bigger impact than the average violent movie. It's just that parents generally know what movies not to let their kids watch, but for some reason don't make the same distinction for video games. This wouldn't be too bad if parents did what they have to do and talk to the kid about how it's all just a game and that it isn't "fun" when it happens in real life, but they either underestimate the kid's intelligence or simply forget that they should be, yanno, raising the kid?

I know a lot of people, and not just in my age group. My poll is the same as their study. It is a select group of people studied and the generalizations are meant to relate to society as a whole.

But is it enough to be statistically relevant in all the key categories? This is a problem I have with a bunch of scientific studies in recent memory, the group of people just isn't big enough. I read of a study from some European university this very day in the newspaper, actually, which stated that families with two daughters and no sons are the happiest, based on a poll with 200 families. And I'm assuming it'll all have been in the same mall over a weekend or two. Obviously there are two big faults here (1 isn't important, but it's that the whole thing makes no sense to directly link happiness to the amount and gender of children you have, let alone using a POLL to deduce it) but the second is the number of people, asked. Honestly, anything under 10,000 people for a country-wide or international study just doesn't cut it. "166 kids in 29 schools in Boston/New Hampshire" is like me saying the entire South of America consists of 80% racists because I knocked on five doors in one street and asked their opinion on black people. And the fifth guy was a black man. Beyond that you also need to make sure every different group (age, location, background, etc) is present enough to be statistically revelant.

Exactly, these studies should really be taken with a grain of salt, because they're not universal.
