I don't think it's that bizarre. The amount of obscure references from Nintendo's history that exist in both Melee and Brawl kinda set a precedent, don't you think? Maybe it had nothing to do with his popularity.

we already have a decent deal of retro characters though even if mega-man and pac-man are third parties, they're definitely sticking with older looks for them little mac has had, what, one new game? i'd consider him retro personally EDIT: not to mention he's japan-exclusive. sure, Lucas was too but at least Earthbound was localized. takamaru is from a super-obscure game only released in japan and wasn't really known about until recently

That's why he's an assist trophy. If he was a real character, then yeah, I'd say we're going a little overboard on the retro characters.

Is there such a thing? This game series is a celebration of Nintendo and it's history, how is including as many of their roots as possible going overboard?

idk balance and s*** That was kinda what I was originally saying, though. I appreciate that it's an amalgamation of Nintendo's history, but at the same time, there's a point where you say, "Okay, we've represented this generation well enough..." And three characters is a fine sum. Four?... I mean, I was skeptical about the idea of having four Fire Emblem characters in (I've since come to terms with it). Because across the entire franchise, the only three universes to ever have four or more representatives at any given moment in the series was Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon. Justifiably so. The fourth is... Fire Emblem. I don't know, it doesn't sing that well to my ears. Same thing with the retro characters, but perhaps even more so. I think there is such a thing as "overkill" and "preferential treatment", even if it's inadvertent.

imo retro should be considered a series of sorts and be limited i'm sure most of us wouldn't enjoy the game as much if it just had all retro characters and no recognizable characters like Robin or Greninja to newer/more modern fans

did you miss the point where Fire Emblem has thirteen games and Star Fox got three characters in Brawl with five games or

Except Star Fox sells more. Sure, Fire Emblem is more relevant outside of Japan than it's ever been. That doesn't really mean anything to me, though.

i doubt star fox sells more due to the fact there aren't more games of it our last game was, what, command? in 2006? pushing the remake aside that's pretty far back

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=fire+emblemhttp://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=star+foxThese are my sources... I shouldn't have said "sells more", I meant to say "has sold more". To me, if something has sold more, they are more relevant in a historic sense. I don't think a franchise deserves to get pandered to even more just because it's finally started to grow wings.

How are the logistics behind the sales relevant to the fact that the sales were still indeed lower? The fact is, more people know about Star Fox than they do about Fire Emblem. The fact that Fire Emblem had that disadvantage doesn't change anything. And I'll just stress again that I don't actually care all that much anymore about the over-representation of FE characters. But they are over-represented. Unless every other universe gets an extra character.
