Agreed. Level 1 characters are fairly weak. Also, anyone know what happens if you use a Knight's Crest on a knight?

They promote, they get an increase in stats and can level up further, once a character reaches level 20 they can't level up further, so promoting them lets them keep leveling up, as well as becoming a better class, one with more movement, betters cap, and often more weapons to choose from. In most FEs promotion is fixed, but in this one you can make any character one of two classes.
Also trainees are characters like Ross, Ewan, and Amelia, all of whom suck badly. Level one characters like Franz and Vanessa start and level one are two of the best non-Seth characters in the game (Seth is god tier like a ginger meta knight).

Thanks for the info. You have to be at level 10 to use it, right?

Yes, also specific characters need specific items to promote. For example fighters and myridmon need a hero's crest to promote while cavaliers need a knight crest. It's best to promote near 20, if you use the tower of grinding, get them to 20 who cares. But if you are anti grinding, then promote around level 16 or 18, they'll be useful all game that way.

Opps my bad, just a typo. And yeah, seth is a god.He can take no damage with most enemies and easily kill bosses with one or two turns. What is support for and how do you know who between who and who can use support?(new to fire emblem,my first FE game and am loving it)

Finally something I actually know! Support is when two characters talk to each other to get a closer relationship. It can only be used for certain characters, like Neimi and Colm.

Support is that in essence. But it is also far more. every character can have a support with a select list of characters, these conversation reveal backstories and expand personalities on the story front, but on a gameplay front it's way more. http://serenesforest.net/fe8/support_table.htmHere you'll find a list of supports and their bonuses, these bonuses increase avoid and attack in battle when the units are close. Supports while hard in an efficient low turn count playthrough are amazingly helpful. Different elements give different bonuses, so no they aren't random and they also build over C to B. for example two fire supports would have a 1+ attack in C, a 2+ attack at B level support, and 3+ attack at A rank. Nice try, but you can't top my complete nerdy devotion of my favorite series and going in super depth.

Damn, Fire Emblem sounds exactly like Shining Force. Except for the part where allies that die cant be brought back to life. I know it's for difficulty, but I still hate it.

Yeah, it's frustrating how one of your best characters die from an unexpected critical hit.

I actually knew that...but still thanks @talesoffan Is support an important factor in winning? Because if not I'm not gonna use it,looks kinda troublesome.

I don't fully understand the support option, it seems like something extra you can do, but only affects the story in a very small way.

If you really hate it, I suggest trying Shining Force for the Genesis.

I think an unfair crit only hit me once, granted it puts ya in a crappy mood but it's not game ruining. Perma death is addicting, it makes you think about every situation more and thus makes the game far more deep then most other SRPGs.
Also for supports, it really depends, I find it's range to be incredibly helpful to nominally helpful. It really depends on the situation. I think getting a C support between your units will be more then enough. C supports often happen naturally without much effort so theres no reason not to use it.
For example, having that crit avoid is really helpful if you want to use the arena and the offense boost really helps characters with poor strength.

Well it gives some endings, if a male and female have an A support together, they often have an ending together. Again, if you play for plot it helps character development, but it's really up to you. None of you really seem that "ZOMG TURNCOUNTS" so you can just kill every enemy in a chapter and just have units who support stand next to each other until they build a support. Oh yes, BTW, you can only have 5 support conversations for each character. If you people have any more questions how not to suck at FE, ask me.
