Closer to the Heavens
Setting: show
In a land much like ours laid a continent. This continent was primarily inhabited by men, much like Earth and if any further comparisons had to be made it would resemble North East Asia during its feudal periods. Geographically, it was surrounded by the ocean from three sides. On the eastern end was a great mountain range which was practically impenetrable. Further east were lands rumored to be fertile and unclaimed. The only base where fools would attempt the crossing was at the base of a waterfall that flowed down from the highest peaks, in the shadow Heaven’s Watch the tallest amongst them.

From this waterfall, the river snaked through the rolling steppes and finally emptying to the southwestern end of the continent. As such, two of the three major nations that occupied the continent made their home there.

Those that claimed the banks of the rivers around the steppes were the Shokun Empire. It is currently ruled by the Child Emperor, Shokun II who ascended after his father’s recent passing. For fear of so much power to a single man, two men have been appointed as regents. The commander of the Empire’s military, Shogun Beniyama Daisuke was one; the spiritual leader of the Empire, Master Adjudicator Hohoemi Shiranui was the other. These two men represented the two greatest factors that governed the lives of the people of Shokun; martial prowess and religion. The Empire was a militaristic nation, much more so that its neighbours; having little peers in this regard. Famed for their mastery of cavalry and infantry, the Empire could and did in fact have regular contests of martial arts; even for children. To mistake the Empire for a culture of violent savages would be a great mistake as the glue that binds the populace together was religion. Practically all of the citizens believed in the One and True God, who sits atop Heaven’s Watch and judged one’s worth as one lived their life. Those who were deemed worthy or not were handed different fates once they died.

As with all religions, there have been lengthy disputes to the interpretation of divine mandate. Given the militaristic nature of the Empire this has ended up as a ritual war between the two main schools of martial arts and thought. These ritual wars were decided not by body count but by an impartial adjudicator, a custodian of the religion, or for smaller skirmishes, an adjutant.

And then there was the issue of those who were Weh no Su. A term from an older tongue, it translated roughly as “Closer to the Heavens.” What was special about Weh no Su was their usual skill in exorcism and other matters of spirituality. Such powers come at a price, ranging from mild nausea to a slow and painful death. Weh no Su bear a common mark somewhere on their dominant arm (truly ambidextrous Weh no Su are seen with two marks), that of a lily in bloom, and it was said that those that had bigger marks were meant to die young though this has not always been the case. Becoming Weh no Su is no different than drawing a winning lot. Often than not, many are born as Weh no Su, their marks clear from birth while other times grown men and women are seen to suddenly grasp their arm as if on fire and discover a blooming lily etched on it. Regardless of their origin, Weh no Su have a place in the Empire’s society regardless of how they choose to live. Many, seeking to further understand the mystery behind their powers choose to become people of cloth, using their powers to serve the One and True God, while others may simple decide to live normal, peaceful lives. Those that choose the path of a criminal usually end up deader than cicadas at summer’s end. After all, they were men and women too and even if there were some jealousy, respect would equal it.

Thankfully, there were not many threats that specifically required a Weh no Su to act. Of note there was only one, spirits of the deceased would often stalk the lands. They were known by many names, Yure was one that was most common, to the south, Singh and to the north, Khiimori. When immaterial, they took various recognisable forms, otherwise, their material manifestation resembled a beetle with sizeable jaws that stood upright with a fur lined back. The carapace of their material bodies was harder than steel, even the joints were like unbreakable chainmail yet it was a shiny obsidian colour. However, they still remained vulnerable from behind as their backs were lined with brown fur. Yure, in their physical form, were as diverse as any species, retaining only the armoured chitin and vulnerable backs as a common trait. The immaterial bodies however, were far more dangerous as they could possess and take control of still living humans and animals. Side effects of this vary but it is certain that many who are possessed have glazed and immobile eyes. Only Weh no Su could exorcise and then return the spirit to wherever they come. These spirits could only possess one person and once they are driven out they become relatively harmless regardless of their original intentions. Some of the more amiable spirits coexist with whoever tolerated their presence.

With all this mention of spirits, it could be said that there was something magical about this land. This was not completely inaccurate. It was simply just the power of a belief and the blessings of God taking form. Such blessings usual resided in weapons and items as the Weh no Su were usually the only ones who could manifest amongst other things, forceful gales, superior strength and greater endurance. This power was drawn from the conviction of the wielder and usually produced effects associated with the name of the item.

Story
On the eve of a ritual battle to be conducted just outside a quiet little town Hakone, warriors were celebrating their victories in advance; which made the town not as quiet as it usually was admittedly. Adjutant Onimodo Kutama was outside the temple atop the tallest hill and shifted his gaze from the town aglow to the battleground. The hand he put to the stubble around his chin completed the image of him deep in contemplation. Though it was true, his primary concern was not about the battle itself. He had overseen half a dozen battles and stopping them was not his concern. What he was worrying about was the Weh no Su his blood brother had adopted and left in his care. She was younger than he, much so, barely out of childhood, yet already she was dying inside. God had determined that her negligible power as Weh no Su be accompanied by terminal illness. Suzu-sama, as he called her, would not live through the night if the doctors were to be believed. She had requested to visit this temple to pray earlier in the day but had collapsed and remained barely conscious in one of the halls. What would his brother think? Just then as a light breeze started to blow as if God was answering.

It carried the stench of rotting meat and before he knew it, dark figures started to emerge from the ground and started engulfing the light of the town. Then it began in earnest. The sounds of screams and battle had barely even reached his ears before monstrous Yure, the likes of which he had only heard of in children’s tales, started their ascent of the hill. They were surely coming to defile the temple to the One and True God that had cast them away for their sins; spiteful creatures that they were. But there was another reason, the temple was holy ground and the only way in was through one narrow entrance that Kutama now barred. It was a safe haven to those that made it inside and an easily defendable one at that. Anyone with at least a remote familiarity with Yure would take shelter here first. The temple’s bells were ringing, calling for a defense to be formed. Right now, it fell up to the Adjutant and whatever monks that could bear arms to defend the entrance.

He drew the katana by his waist and stood in the default stance and clearly announced to the assembled monsters,

“This blade has many names, but the one that will send you back to the darkness is this.”

Kutama was interrupted as one of the Yure leapt forward, claws attempting to plunge in to his body. He stepped forward swatting the limbs aside, creating the sound of ringing steel, and the monster around. From there his sword cut deep in to the exposed back of the Yure whose hiss could curdle milk. It slowly evaporated in to nothingness and Kutama continued where he left off without missing a beat,

“The Whimsical Hurricane, in bright blue, cloudless sky.”

He would cut open a path for those who sought shelter.

General Guidelines
  • Combat against mooks are handled at a player’s discretion but I will step in if you can’t be sensible about it.
  • Create an overpowered character at your own risk. ORIGINAL CHARACTERS ONLY!
  • This is a freeform RP but I’d like to keep the PvP lowkey as there will be a plot.
  • The fluff that I have typed is not set in stone, I advise you to expand upon it.
  • Character sheet is required this time, as much as I hate to admit it.
  • If you can not keep up with the pace, PM me or I will kill your characters off to drive the plot and other things. Make a new character if your previous one has been made worm's meat.

Why your character would be travelling on the road and still survive the nightly roaming Yure:

Example character sheet: show
Name: Adjutant Onimodo Kutama
Age: Under a decade short of score years
Fighting Style: Yoten Ichi-Ryu or Four Heavens under One [School of] Swordsmanship
Weapon: A standard length katana called Whimsical Hurricane, in bright blue, cloudless sky (suffix is only for poetic purposes)
Present Appearance: Kutama is not short by Shokun standards but he isn’t a giant. Tonight he is wearing a white uwagi with a maroon hakama. A black obi is barely visible around his waist. His body is built from years of training yet has the scars of battle. Likewise, on his face, he wears a small scar on his chin which he prefers to keep clean. Various shades of the night are the colours his eyes. Unlike facial hair, Kutama cultivates his long dark hair, but it seems to always be measurably shorter after battle. If untied, it would be at his waist; the ribbon that ties it, is a gift and is pink.
Why your character would survive the initial onslaught of monstrosities:
There are three main reasons. One is that at a young age, when he was orphaned by war, he was adopted by a then nameless adjutant from a moderately wealthy family. He was then taught the art of swordsmanship, specifically, the Yoten Ichi-Ryu style. Years of practice had honed his skill considerably and would have been tested to earn his rank as a master of the style if not for his duties as an adjutant. Secondly, his sword, Whimsical Hurricane, is deceptive in appearances. Though it has a slightly blue sheen along the blade, the true deadliness lies within its capability to split in to four identical copies. Along with Kutama’s skill, truly showcases the signature style of the Yoten Ichi-Ryu. Two swords in hand and the other two either airbourne, embedded in the ground or an enemy. Finally, he was near holy ground. Power from such a place seeps out to the surroundings but the effects are understandably diminished the further it travels. Even then the temple was on a hill and physical Yure seem to have an extreme dislike of approaching holy ground from their usual means of entering the world which is by clawing up from the bowels of the earth.

Fighting Styles
  • The Science of Eight Limbs: This style from Talay does not shy away from weapons but the core of it remains as an unarmed style. Employing knees, kicks, elbows and fists to maximize the destructive potential of a human it leaves opponents broken, battered, dead or dying. The Science of Eight Limbs is also one of the oldest styles.
  • Krabi Krabong: Weapon fighting style originating the country of Talay. Utilizing a cutting sabre in the main hand and an equally long stick (usually the scabbard) in the off hand, this style emphasizes simultaneous attack and defence, with the intention to kill in one hit. This is more an offshoot of the Science of Eight Limbs but its history is nearly as long, no doubt developing along side the former.
  • Tartariyan Wrestling: A style of grappling originating from the northern lands of the Tartariya. Bringing down foes, especially those that are large, before finishing them off with finishing strikes and holds are a specialty. Those caught unwary by the primal looking stance are in for a rude surprise as it is possibly one of the most stable. Wrestlers maintain a low profile allowing them greater stability on which to launch their attacks.
  • Winged Man of the Mesa: This is not the true name of the style since it is the one used in Tartariyan military doctrine for their elite cavalry. Students are taught archery, swordsmanship and use of a lance, both on horseback and on foot. Little else is known as battlefield accounts are rare and most of the style is shrouded in myth.
  • Way of Balance: A style originating from one of the two warring sects of Shokun religion, the Way of Balance is notable for having two styles in one. Men and women are taught diametrically opposed styles. It is the union of the two style and practitioners that define the philosophy of opposites achieving balance, of which the style is named. A notable offshoot is the Maiden Supreme Swordsmanship which combines in to one, straight swords, two lovers and a harmonious yet formidable style of fighting. Fortunately, this offshoot is rather small as straight swords are not mass produced in Shokun.
  • Triumvirate School: The other sect of Shogun religion believes in humans possessing three characters. Notable for its three stances, that of Virtue, Perseverance and Sin, it can theoretically be applied to any weapon, even unarmed. Each stance has its own philosophy and application. The stance of Virtue favours non-violence, with the user pointing their weapons away and using it only to deflect and defend. The stance of Perseverance favours survival and thus simultaneous defence and attack; a useful and balanced stance. Finally, the stance of Sin is one of calculated viciousness to the point of ignoring defence to land a blow.

Other Countries
Talay and its capital sit at the delta of the river that flows through Shokun. Roughly to the south west, its lands encompass what Shokun does not to the south. Travel south enough from the main river bank and you would suddenly find yourself in the country of Talay. Its people were darker skinned, but not much more than those of Shokun, and were mostly traders. Those were not merchants could easily be part of Talay’s navy. Goods had to be shipped to the other side of the continent after all and with all many of dangers associated with the crossing, there had to be some protection. Rightly so as Talay itself means “the Sea.” Consequently, many males from Talay know a good measure of the Science of Eight Limbs, an iconic fighting style used as self defence. Rarely do their regular barges sail upriver, but when they do, it is usually as a cruise ship of some sort, bringing wealthy men and women who delight in Shokun’s ritual wars or “Blood Sport” as it was known in their tongue. However, living in such a mercantile and at times, opulent environment, trustworthiness and Talay are an ocean apart if there is no payment of some kind being arranged.

Ages ago, there were great rivers and the land that is now known as Tartariya was probably underneath the sea level at some point. Now it is home to a civilization of s****, nomads, inventors and assassins hidden among the canyons’ nooks and crannies. The aspect of Tartariya that the world sees most is the s**** though. Horses are usually necessary to leap over chasms and canyons that men could not. Many sport a wooden frame running up from the saddle with feathers on it like a wing and they are some of the best cavalrymen in the world. The Shokun called these winged s**** the Hayaijin. Their capital is translated as Black Mesa, a single, wide and round mesa that had been hollowed out and used as a city. Surrounding it was a relatively wide plain and even then, there was no other geological formation taller in sight. No one could challenge the Black Mesa without being spotted from faraway. Even then, they would have to brave the lands of opportunistic raiders and a certain order of assassins who have made their home in this unforgiving landscape. Men and women however, live in almost their own societies, coming only together for family occasions such as marriage or funerals. Men are usually hairless save for a top knot which they grow and adorn with their family marked decorations. They are the warriors and protectors of Tartariya. The women on the other hand, handle almost everything from the household to innovation to spirituality. Though women handle greater positions of power, there has never been much of a power struggle between men and women as infighting did nothing to help cope in the brutal lands they lived. As such, Tartariyans never refuse help and are immensely loyal. If one owed their life to another, they would serve dutifully and even close friends could become like family members.

Naming Conventions
  • Shokun names follow a Family then Given name format. Japanese names recommended.
  • Talay names follow a Given then Family name format. Chinese or South East Asian names recommended.
  • Tartariya follows a Given names, Patronymic then Family name format. Manchurian or Mongolian names recommended.
  • Fighting Style names should be at least indicative, descriptive or related to its specialty in some way.
  • Weapon names can be flowery and poetic. Be careful lest you do it poorly.

Accepted characters: show
Kamen Rider Green wrote:
Name: Otomo
Age: 27
Fighting Style: None, although he's exceptional at attempting to disarm or disable opponents if forced to.
Weapon: His wooden staff can be considered one, nearly a man's height, and hard enough to block blows, or trade them, and has been used for such, given the countless scratches on it.
Present Appearance: Otomo is of a average height to most men of his age. He currently wears a navy blue hakama, black montsuki haori, and geta for his feet. His face is rugged, and almost always has a comforting, if not weary, smile on it. Lastly, his hands are lined with scars, obviously from grasping a bladed weapon.
Why your character would survive the initial onslaught of monstrosities: If he didn't believe that anything could be solved with non-violent means in his early days, he might have been a skillful warrior, perhaps even a master of whatever style he'd choose. However, he did, and his skills are not as honed as it would be. Despite that, he's still able to fend for himself, and now is willing to let others die (but not by his own hands). He also has unflagging endurance, having not killed anyone as of yet, and having scars to prove it.

Kiki wrote:
Name: Sasaki Mitsuki
Age: 22
Fighting Style: She is well accomplished in the art of tessenjutsu and her shinto upbringing has allowed her to become well versed in the mystic arts and she may incorporate talismans evoking the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
Weapon: Two war fans constructed of metal bindings and painted pink to give the appearance of regular fans as well as give the name to her weapons. "Dancing sakura kisses bring forth blood"
Present Appearance: Mitsuki's hair is a dark red bordering auburn in colour tied with a white band producing a long ponytail. Her eyes are brown, a lively expression seemingly emanating from them. Her complexion is fair, having spent more days indoors than out while in her youth. Her body is slim and delicate though toned through training. She wears a furisode kimono which is sky blue and depicts a blossoming tree on it. Due to her long sleeves, she is able to hide both her metal war fans which hang from each of her wrists. Despite what one may believe by simply looking at her clothing, she can move quickly with her kimono on. A light green obi with decorative pink petals is tied into a neat bow around her waist. On her feet she wears white jika-tabi which allows her quick and agile movement after she kicks off her zori.
Why your character would survive the initial onslaught of monstrosities:
Mitsuki, after being discovered by the miko Akane at the steps of the temple, has spent her entire childhood there. As such, she was preserved by the holy presence that repelled the repulsive Yure, who seemed to wreak havoc as soon as the sun set when night fell over the land. In fact, the first thing she learned how to do concerning the mystic arts involved the evoking of seals that exorcised evil spirits, which is probably the main reason why Mitsuki is alive today. Of course, due to the militaristic nature of the Shokun Empire she was required to know more than a few "magic tricks" as the skeptical district shogun liked to call them, and so she was required to pick up a weapon and learn to fight. After a series of trials she stuck to the war fan seeing as her heart seemed to harmonize with the weapon producing effects worthy of a Weh no Su. A label that had followed her since her birth, indicated by a lotus blossom on each of her arms. Her indomitable spirit however is the key to her preservation, for without her perseverance she would have succumbed to the darkness that seemed to be everywhere.

Naştere wrote:
Name: Çetinkaya Karakurt (Surname > Given name)
Ring Name: Kuzhuk Temujin Borjigin
Age: 43
Fighting Style: Yağlı Güreş, Turkish Oil Wrestling. Karakurt/Kuzhuk respects the traditional rules of friendly competition, and therefore shows the utmost respect to the opponent unless said opponent's courtesy is rash and against the code. To put it lightly, he is a complete, by the book fighter.
Weapon: His body, he calls himself the "Oiled Tiger"
Present Appearance: Fairly hairy body, with a slightly protruding abdominal area, as most Oil Wrestlers seem to carry. He wears no shirt, due to his body being coated with a thick layer of oil most of the day. Pants consist of the traditional hand stitched kisbet made of Water Buffalo hide (or whatever large buffalo type create they have in those parts. His head is beginning to bald, but it is hardly noticeable and much of his greyish-black hair is still easily visible. His upper lip supports a healthy caterpillar like mustache.
Why your character would survive the initial onslaught of monstrosities:
Yağlı Güreş alone stands as a major reason, due to the rigorous nature of the sport. Matches often can go on for days, but Karakurt/Kuzhuk has enough skill to finish matches in less than ten minutes. Another major factor was that the wrestling schools taught that "man is not just matter, but also spirit," and thus "competition without the harmony of matter and spirit would be detrimental to the development of good character." This central thought kindles both mental fortitude with physical strength, along with teaching that mutual respect is key to protecting this balance, fortifying his attitude towards opponents.
Good character and strength enable a man to prosper and reach beyond the limits of what is believed to be possible, and therefore, even though he wields no weapon, he stands an equal chance in many a battle.

|~DVDV~| wrote:
Name: Li Tsu "Lard" Zhang
Age: 36
Fighting Style: Style? You're probably thinking of someone else. Li Tsu swings his hammer around with the grace of an anvil crushing anyone slow enough not to run away. That said, he is incredibly competent at tiě shān and is capable of creating incredibly powerful explosives.
Weapons: He usually uses a giant war hammer, but he will also carry a sword for practicality's sake or for intimidation. He also carries, to deal with those annoying fast people, a blowgun carrying nerve inhibitor for when he deems the opponent too fast for his liking.
Present Appearance: Li Tsu is a brute of a man, standing over six feet tall and weighing over 120kg. He has very short dark hair for comfort and practicality although this cannot be seen under the cover of a full headed helmet helmet with slits only for breathing and vision that he wears most of the time. Within this helmet only his two, bright eyes, small and beady are visible, forever sparkling. Upon the removal of this helmet is a tanned, undamaged face, free from scars or remnants of broken bones. His face is alway smiling and carefree, cheery in spite of the state of the world. Removing more of the full-bodied armour he dons, one would discover a large, hairless and shapeless body with a streak of eczema running along the bottom of his neck, quite probably a result of donning armour for so long. The only other thing worthy of notice is a tattoo covering the whole of the sole of his feet that showing the placing of all the bones within, trademark of his family.
Why your character would survive the initial onslaught of monstrosities: He, in short, is a tank. He can take pretty much every hit aimed at him and barely recoil. Thus, just about the only thing that could kill him would be a very well aimed arrow to the eye (and he has to be watching it for it to reach his brain) or one through the gap between his helmet and the armour on his torso.
Why your character is not cheap enough to be the one picked on by Thai: The armor can still be taken off: it is held together with leather straps and hooks which can still be cut or removed in some other way. The helmet for example is held on merely by five leather straps. In addition to this, the helmet must be removed in order to use the blowpipe. Regarding the explosives, they are too unstable to make beforehand and pull out halfway through a fight. They must be used straight after they are made (with about a 20 window) and thus are only useful for the start of a fight and are useless when dealing with surprise attacks and long battles.

JinSeng wrote:
Name: Ryouichi Zanji
Age: 34
Fighting Style: Zanji is well trained in Naginatajustsu and a bit of additional skill in Kendo
Weapon: Zanji wields a naginata which stands at the height of an average human. He calls it “Golden Sky Above the Heavens”. The blade is crescent shaped and gradually thickens as it reaches the end. A shining golden dragon sits along both sides of the blade. When swung quickly enough, it creates the illusion that the blade glows with a golden shine.
Present Appearance: Zanji stands taller than an average man but in no means a giant. When he is out of his traditional samurai armour, he wears dark grey, one piece kimono, with baggy pants. His armour is dark grey in colour with a golden yellow trim along the edges. He chooses not to wear a face mask because it obstructs his vision.
Why your character would survive the initial onslaught of monstrosities: Zanji enrolled in the army at the age of 15. Initially, he got taught Kendo, but then later learned naginatajutsu. He stuck with the naginata over the katana for most of his time serving for the army. He adapted the ability to “ghost” his blade when swung at will. The blade just becomes a glowing light that can pass through solid objects. The blade cannot solidify during mid swing, only when it comes to a complete stop. Zanji uses this more to play mind games with his enemies rather than passing defences. After serving in the army for a good 10 years, Zanji one day got knocked straight off horseback during training and injured his head, resulting in a concussion and a coma for a week. In this week, the general took Zanji out of the army over some younger troops. Zanji still kept his combat skills and his armour, but prefers to stay at home.

NDUESTRE wrote:
Name: Lei Fu Hai
Age: 29
Fighting Style: Besides his prowess with the rope dart, Fu Hai is capable in Yingzhaoquan (Eagle Claw Style), though he is not nearly masterful enough to rely on it. He has also taken body hardening training enough to render average unarmed attacks useless.
Weapon: A rope dart where the dart takes the form of a large, pointed rod attached to four rings that have a squarish shape, and finally attached to a fine chain knotted into a handle at the end. The small flags on the dart had lost their original color; they are now starchy and dark red. It has a name, though he doesn't bother to tell anyone: Chilling Rain in the lightless night.

War P. Anda wrote:
Name: Yamada Taro
Age: 28
Fighting Style: He has no real fighting style, but he rather just goes with the flow of things. In fact, if asked, he would probably answer with 'The Flow'... what a weirdo.
Weapon: A dagger that looks (somewhat) like a short katana, with a red hilt and guard, and a katana-like blade. Its name is 'Silver Lightning through dark, ashy cloud.'

((As the RP is approaching the end of the first chapter, those interested should post the modified character sheet.))

I'm interested in this (aside from the fact that I've been watching Kung-Fu movies non-stop since my cable got cut). A few questions though. Are the Weh no Su looked down upon or seen as an outcast in anyway and are there any other common forms of Yure?

Weh no Su are just marked as special, there are no positive or negative undertones derived from it. Well I'm sure new type of Yure could be happened upon but those are the most commonly seen forms. And by that, I mean forms that people have seen and lived to tell a tale about. I'm still working and you just got me motivated even more.

I'm also curious about the Weh no Su, I'm not sure whether you plan on revealing this through your RP if you decide to take it off the drawing board but what are their lives like? Is anyone with the mark expected/forced to go into some sort of work for the temple/empire?

This, ladies is a prime example how not to do a character sheet. Please try again after rereading the Guidelines for this RP.

Before I start working on something, we can take an existing fighting style and make it more fictional with our own fluff, and after reading through the example character sheet, do our characters have access to some sort of magical power in combat?

I was wondering if characters were allowed to have 'Magic Swords and/or Other Assorted Weapons', myself, seeing as how the Hurricane can split in four...

I'd like to join, but I didn't have time to participate in Stars Of Fate and I doubt I'll find time for this one. Sorry.

Name: Otomo

Gah, I can't think of anything.

Yes, you can. Though make an overpowered character at your own risk.

Gah, I can't think of anything.

At least he doesn't have a giant sword that refreshes stamina of nearby combatants when he lands a hit on an enemy. Accepted. If you decide to add a little more to him, feel free.

Man I loved playing Battle Realms, too bad I didn't actually own it.

And make overpowered characters at risk? Does that mean they'll be in more trouble than a normal character?
