The entryway to the vault sealed itself just as the husks were beginning to close in. The timing seemed too perfect, but one would never be able to tell from the abysmal look that now painted Lucia's usually vibrant face...

A silver crate containing a black box... Somewhere inside this vault the pair were looking for an item Gonye had instructed them to find, but after all they had been through Gonye's instructions seemed so faint. Regardless of this, the two would have to start looking for both the item and a way to escape the vault. A long hallway, some 60 or so metres long, composed most of the first section within the vault, glass cases and small bookshelves lined the hall breaking every so often to clear the way for seven doors which shared the same space, three on both sides and one at the very end of the expanse. The vault looked to be in far better shape than the room outside, in fact it appeared as though this area had only been accumulating dust. The vibrant red stones that had been covered by the overgrowth outside the vault shined with greatness inside the vault, and torches all about seemed to still be burning in controlled glass globes, providing light to the entirety of this sectioned off world.

Just before entering the hall there was a large maple wood desk with a sign clinging to the wall behind it reading:
Strongrooms:

Though he and Lucia had just narrowly evaded death for the nth time since coming to this blasted university, erratus was in no mood to be relieved. Completely ignoring his partner, he scanned the room to find anything of interest. They would need to locate both the black box What's-his-face wanted so badly, as well as an exit. All he could see, though, were seven doors and a desk with a sign hanging behind it. He approached the sign and stared blankly at it for a few seconds, as if he could make out what it said if he looked hard enough. When he realized it wasn't working, he kicked the desk in frustration and wandered randomly into the third room on the list. As far as he knew, it was full of pie and rhinoceros.

~Arcana Armoury~

The Arcana Armoury is a portion of the vault that contains most of the magical weapons and weapon enhancers that the Aesterian expeditionary forces could procure from lands near and far. Though most of the items that were originally in the room were taken to the capital when Gennenburg was being abandoned, much still remained. The room wasn't huge or grandeur like most of the rooms inside the academy, it seemed it was square in shape and would take roughly 20 or so full paces to cross the room in each direction. The room was filled with large glass shelves that rose to the medium height ceiling of the vault and armour racks that, along with much of the shelves, were fairly empty.

No 'black box' could be spotted in this room, though there were multiple things within the room that appeared to be interesting to one who might find swordplay interesting. In some of the glass cases there were swords and pieces of armour that seemed foreign and many of them were clearly labeled to explain their usage, though this was absolutely no help to one who was illiterate. But there was one thing in the room that even an illiterate man could find value in, at least if he knew the tale of mage slayers. The Mage Slayers were a group of assassins and warriors who were trained by the Aesterian government to hunt renegade mages and mancers and either kill them or subdue them. Many of the Mage Slayers used magic to help them catch renegade mages, but it wasn't their own magic they used. Commonly they used magical resins which, when applied to a sword, turned their weapons into columns of great fire, lightning, and ice for a short period of time. These very resins sat before Erratus in a case at the center of the room. Dried and appearing like precious stones the resins most likely weren't taken to the capital because of their volatile nature, if even a single dried resin was crushed by heavier cargo it could have easily swallowed the whole caravan in fire, but now dozens upon dozens of them sat before Erratus in a case; red, blue, gold, purple- who knew what each of the resins held inside their gooey core?

Erratus couldn't help but grin broadly as he carried his considerable haul from the room. He had picked out a few daggers and an elaborately engraved short sword, which now hung from his waist in a scabbard. He had left the armor mostly untouched since he couldn't figure out how to put most of it on, but he had swiped a cape from one of the displays, and was now using it as a makeshift sack to carry his loot. For the time being, it contained the dried resins he had found, though he had understandably mistaken them for precious gems.

The thief's earlier frustration had all but vanished, replaced with kleptomaniacal glee. He couldn't wait to see what was in the other rooms, black box be damned. However, Erratus couldn't help but feel a bit concerned about Lucia. She hadn't budged since they'd entered the vault, clearly still troubled by something. He placed the sack gently on the ground and approached her, tapping her lightly on the shoulder to get her attention.
"Hey, you still with me?"

OOC: Last school assignment of this semester >.>

Lucia remained addled, the euphoric feelings that she had felt just moments before seemed to beat around her subtly, hinting at power, yet remaining elusive to her grasp. She shook her head once more as Khast tapped her on her shoulder and was snapped back into reality with a jolt. Her eyes no longer glazed over as she looked at the thief who now carried a sack filled with things she could faintly sense as magical objects. She wasn't surprised.

"Oh," she blinked vacantly "Sorry, I just...I've been feeling odd" Lucia looked up at the sign "Well, since you've already gone through what I may assume was the Arcana armoury, I'll search through those two over there" she said pointing at the rooms which led to Enchantments and Magical Focuses, and the other which led to Tomes and Foreign Collectibles. While she may not have been able to acquire anything worth while in the library, due to the mass of husks, she would definitely be able to find something in those rooms that would help her with her magic, and perhaps even expand her repertoire. "If you'd like, I think Arcane Objects would be a good opportunity to find the black box" she said pointing to the room as directed by the sign.

Those things said, she walked towards the room addressed as Tomes and Foreign Collectibles.

A bit relieved now that Lucia had rejoined the land of the living, the thief stalked off toward the room she had pointed to. However, something made him stop short. He recalled the the husk he had encountered back in the archives.

"I... I want to see it. I need to see it."

Erratus could still hear the desperation in the creature's voice, a desperation that seemed all too human. It made him question what the true nature of these husks were.

"Hey, Lucia." The thief called. "If you find anything that looks like a mask, be sure to grab it." Before she had a chance to question him, he disappeared through the doorway of the room marked Arcane Objects.

Tomes and Foreign Collectibles

Just as one might deduce, this particular portion of the vault was covered wall to wall in bookshelves that were labeled according to what kind of books were held on the shelves: History of The West, History of The East, Geography, Magic, Biographies, Lineage, The Great Expeditions, Arms and Armour, Military Principles, Enchantments.

The room itself was not much larger than the Arcana Armoury, perhaps 20 or so paces in each direction could effortlessly cover the expanse. In the center of the room a set of tables formed a large square around a cover-less case filled with exotic weapons, jewelry and books. The tables themselves were overlaid with papers, quills, scrolls, stamps, candles for melting wax, and other scholarly objects, all tossed about in an incredibly unorganized fashion. Many of the burning orbs that lit the rest of the vault seemed incredibly dim or burned out in this room giving it an extremely eerie feeling, and when casually walking about the room it was hard to ignore the feeling that oneself might not be alone in this room that not so long ago housed the lives and professions of dozens of people...
______

Arcane Objects

There it was, clear as day before Erratus was the exact silver, knee high crate they had been sent to retrieve...

Inside the room labeled Arcane Objects there were no objects one could describe as arcane, only this single silver crate. Perhaps the rest of the objects had been successfully removed from the vault, but then why would this crate have been left behind? Perhaps there never were any other arcane objects to begin with? And what was inside the black box. and why were the pair forbid from opening?

_______

Venosar - To The South...

Quote:
Venosar was quite a sight to behold for one who had never seen eastern cultures. Most of the buildings seemed to be made of wood and clay as opposed to western stone and refined planks. The town wasn't huge, but it wasn't very small either. Most of the largest buildings in town surrounded a road, the only paved road, that cut directly through the city but as the eyes strayed from the road the buildings on both sides gradually became smaller and smaller till there were nothing but tents and small makeshift shelters.

Darkness was swiftly falling upon Venosar as the habitual southward storms of the north was slowly closing in on the 'enclave city'. Soon oppressive winds and rain would arrive, and not far behind it the creeping darkness of night was to follow. Many of the inhabitants of the city, from the steadfast warrior Draniki to the farming and barbaric Khazareen were beginning to retreat into tents, inns, hovels and other refuges to evade the weather, in due time the streets would be thoroughly empty...

Nero was exhausted from sifting through the intricate streets of Venosar looking for some ghost of a man from the far east that Gonye had sent them to find and with the streets clearing the chances of finding this Kariya person that Gonye had sent them on a wild hunt for were dwindling even faster. Still upset about being split from the only person he could trust, Nero dragged his feet back to the center street of Venosar and tossed his body against a pole to await his three companions return.

Lucia just barely heard Khast as she entered the room, nodding before she paused for a moment as she stood in the doorway to the room leading to Tomes and Foreign Collectibles. She was in awe; all these books were filled with vast amounts of knowledge. Making sure not to waste another second she entered the room reading the various topic headings. It was unfortunate that she could not take all these books with her, they were filled with such invaluable information.

Pulling a loose thread from her cloak, she unwound the thread, magically releasing the fire from its conformed fibrous form, providing greater light than the exhausted magical orbs that feebly shone in the room. She walked along each wall, trailing her finger along the spine of each book, stopping only twice. Once to pick up a large book from the magic section, and the second time to pick up a book on enchantments. Surely, had she had the time, she would've loved to read about lineages and history, but time was most definitely of the essence. That, and she wanted to learn as much about magic as she could now, she doubted she would ever return to this desolate school once she left.

Bringing the books over to the table in the middle, the ball of fire trailing behind her only just slightly, she placed the book on magic upon the table and opened it, her chance to finally learn more about magic had finally arrived.

Erratus was almost let-down to have found the box so quickly. He was hoping to find more valuable treasure like what he had taken from the armory. Well, at least there were two more rooms to search, aside from the ones Lucia had chosen. The thief hoisted up the loot his arms and, forgetting to be curious about what was inside, left the room. Eager to pick out what part of the vault he would visit next, he haphazardly dropped the black box onto his pile of gems.

ooc: You'll have to forgive me Kiki if you're not big on reading but this is what happens when you open a book. Count yourself lucky if that's the case, the original word count was getting into the 6000s but I cut most of it as I was unsure if anyone would even be interested in reading all the fluff.

Cracking open the old book the title of the book immediately revealed itself to Lucia...

The Lost and Unknown: The Untapped Arcane

and beneath these words, in a bold red ink, was a name followed by a title.

Eyleon Argasere of Annsbruck, Lord of The Rhyalar region and the Head of House Argasere

Turning to the next page the book immediately began...

Quote:
Hundreds of years ago man crawled forth, unwashed and loathsome, from deep scars within the earth and defiantly they challenged the creatures who inhabited the surface world. After a war that lasted ages, man conquered the world using loyalty, iron, and magic. Magic has been with man since its roots, or so it is said, but when men began to spread out across the surface world magic seemed to deteriorate slowly until very little knowledge of the art remained. Many blame this on Leto who abandoned his many students and left man to fend for themselves near the end of the war. Others debate Leto's' actual existence and claim that the mythical First Mage was in fact nothing but just that, a myth. Leto's true shape or existence is of no matter in our current world, but what is of matter is the masses growing fear of magic and mages growing inability to use it. The arcane arts are slowing dwindling as each generation grows weaker and loses attunement with their inner-energy. Within the next five generations many have predicted that finding a true mage will be nigh impossible and what we will be left with is urchins and callow fools who will be nothing but impudent street performers and inutile court mages whose greatest magical feat will have been turning a page within a tome using their vile dribble. For Aestaria to remain a power within the world we mustn't allow ourselves to fall behind others, I have been to the east, to Yarris, and to the country of Shara where another type of magic has become commonplace. Shara is a land where soldiers train themselves day and night to reach an advanced state of spiritual understanding so that they may freely tap into the deep reservoirs of energy within the bodies' and unleash destruction on their foes. Shara has never lost a war, ever... The Sharasi have always obliterated those who have stood before them using magic, these are people who have never even heard the name Leto! So what excuse does the west have for allowing their true power to dwindle? We've grown passive and inattentive, perhaps even apathetic to the world about us. Many mages of the west have no idea what a gate is, the most fundamental part of magic has been lost to so many. Gates are the basic part of a network inside the human body that allows energy to travel about, this includes the areas where energy is stored, released, and captured.

All humans release some type of energy from their first gate, but only by birth attunement or training can we feel this energy being released. This energy is generally faint and can be used to perform minor feats such as controlling already existent elements such as the fire of a torch or the water of a flowing stream. The power of the first gate is completely dependent on the opening of the second the gate, a task that only a mage or someone who has a strong sense of center can achieve. It is from the second gate that all true mages draw power, and the more power they have the stronger their first gate becomes. This power can be used to create flames from the simple oxygen in the air, or call down great bolts of lightning. In Shara they refer to the second gate as an area of the body known as the Coen Zhusa. The Sharasi unlock energy from the Coen Zhusa by performing spiritual exercises repeatedly from dawn to dusk. Some of the exercises include moving the body about in flowing motions whilst breathing or punching a stone wall until your energy naturally shields your hand from harm. These exercises may appear, to the untrained, to be completely artificial- but they are not. The Sharasi men are capable of releasing amazing energy from their second gate and with little trouble they were able to redirect the energy to any point of their body. Men were able to shatter stones with a single strike. Others were capable of allowing their body to be directly struck by spears and glaives, but sustained no damage. The western mind is not able to comprehend what these men were truly capable of, their power was so raw... Words cannot describe the ferocity which stirred deeply inside their bodies, but that ferocity was inhibited, made to bend to the users will, travel where they wished it, expelled only when they determined it.

Opening the second gate and drawing on its power is no easy task, the men of Shara, as stated before, have trained for years upon years performing the same exercises over and over until their bodies could handle opening the second gate and drawing upon it. Many mages from elsewhere have learned to open the second gate through exercising usage of their first gate, though this seems to be a working system it still can lead to undesirable side effects. Some mages, after first tapping into their second gate claimed they felt as if they were disemboweling themselves and that they needed to vomit to discharge some kind of uneasy force from their bodies. Others suffered through severe lightheaded-ness, temporary loss of the motor skills, consciousness, vision, and numerous other senses such as touch and hearing. These side effects eventually fade away after the second gate has been fully opened and the power within can be tapped into but how far one can exert themselves is still limited by how much energy is stored behind the second gate. Scholars still do not agree what happens to one who overexerts themselves when attempting to tap into their second gate without proper training. The Pyromancer in-training Hessik Vareen could perhaps serve as a model for what might happen to one who is capable of ignoring the side effects of exhaustion and continue to attempt to open their second gate. Hessik was part of an open rebellion of foreigners lead by his teacher Galvin of Aitos. The rebel forces clashed with Aestarian forces at what is now known as the battle of Greenwert. Many of the rebels were killed during this battle, including Galvin, the rebel leader. Hessik on the other hand was captured and carted off to the capital to be tried and executed for treason, but on the way to the capital Hessik and all the men inside his prison cart were caught in a small fiery blast the originated from inside of Hessik's body. According to one rebel Hessik was attempting to conjure forth a hellish inferno in an endeavor to escape but was unable to do so as he had never been train to perform such an act. Allegedly he was wailing in pain, crying and even vomiting but was able to continuously exert himself until he violently cooked himself from the inside out. Hessik's fate should serve as an example to every mage, the example being that they know and understand that they have limits that must be aptly and knowledgeably challenged so that they may overcome them. The idea that you must pace oneself when learning anything is common knowledge, yet many seem to think they can change the rules of anything with magic. The Sharasi believe that purely through strength of will they can rise above and beyond even their own gods who were long ago just ordinary people as well. This idea that a strong will and complete devotion to your art can somehow allow you to achieve a level of perfection, even if it is faux perfection, has left many outsiders completely questioning their own lives. Though Sharasi rarely use their art to control the elements and instead seem to favour using their energy to bolster themselves and their weapons, I believe every mage must look to the east for a true understanding of what magic truly is. Without observing the Sharasi's brilliant and romantic world of recluse warriors in training one can never and should never consider themselves a true master of the magic arts. The Sharasi have much to teach and have always been willing to help others who wish to achieve the ultimate state of understanding, Yeo Danhao.

Yeo Danhao is believed to be the ultimate goal of the Sharasi way. Only one who has dedicated their entire life to being one with the world around them and having complete mastery of their inner energy can achieve this state. It is believed that each of the many gods of the Sharasi religion achieved this absolute state and ultimately became so powerful that they could no longer be contained in a single place, and as such became part of the ambient energy that emanates from all things in nature, the first gateway energy. Though the western understanding of the energy gates is much less mystical and more 'scientific' therefor cementing it as an absolute study rather than a loose teaching, I still find myself more interested in the eastern approach to magic and to my grave I will continue to insist that every mage should make a pilgrimage to the east and study in one of the many autochthonous mountain monasteries.

Flipping through pages Lucia's eyes wandered across diagrams of men performing odd ritual like stances, some men sat with their legs crossed and their hands interlocked, others stood in a complex combat like positions. Each diagram had a complex caption beneath it explaining the importance of the stance. Some stances helped to strengthen the connection to one's inner gate. Others existed to help power flow freely through the body or increase the power that is contained in one's body. The book seemed like it was filled with limitless knowledge and information and the chapters after the many diagrams seemed promising with names such as The Flowing River of Internal Power or The Iron Will and The Primary Gate, The Third and Final. But just as these pages were being examined a popping sound erupted from just outside the door in the vault's main hall followed by the smell of smoke...

_____

Erratus dropped the slightly heavy black box onto the pile of aging resins causing a red resin to chip, leaking its precious, gooey innards onto the other resins. As the resins shifted about a yellow one shattered and released a quick arc of lightning which ignited the red goo into a raging fire, but only for a brief period. But all it took was a brief moment for the fire to engulf the other resins, thankfully they burned far too quickly to properly release their energy and perhaps their age didn't help much either. The fire quickly died as a few lingering sparks jumped about from the remaining embers. All but about seven(three red, two blue, two yellow) of Erratus' precious 'gems' had been burned to a crisp, and although a crisis had been adverted by mere chance the thief had still just accidentally burned away objects of great power that demanded even greater wealth. The box on the other hand amazingly remained completely unharmed by the fire, a few scorch marks lined the box here and there but besides that there seemed to be no physical damage dealt to it.

Accompanying the fall of night in Venosar came Kechts, slowly lurching along as if the darkened streets of the city were his home. Even as the coming storm grew he made no note of it. As frightening and jarring as men come, Kechts' presence quickly emptied the streets of anyone who had the common sense to flee. Yet one had not taken notice of him - a rather frustated looking individual resting against a pole. With his attention drawn to the man, Kechts stopped and turned towards him, seemingly the only person unconcerned about finding shelter at such a time. Kechts raised his head, baring his dull expression and dimmed grey eyes, to get a better look at the man and to make his own presence more obvious.

ooc: *throws brick* Also I love lore bring it on! ;D

Lucia read the tome avidly, taking in everything that she could. Every paragraph seemed to piece things together, and things were beginning to make sense to her. The lands of Yarris and Shara seemed quite potent in magic, and if what she read was true, (though she had no doubt that it was), then magic wasn't becoming extinct like everyone said it was. Rather, it was the knowledge of the true practice of magic and tapping into the arcane forces that drove it which had been lost.

This information about "gates" was of deep interest to her, thankfully she had been born with the barest innate ability to spin magic into string, and for a long time she had thought that was all she had been capable. Not so much magical potential, but a small, albeit rare, mage side-show skill. However, after learning what she did from Gonye, it was clear that there was more in her, and this book proved it further. It seems that sickening sensation she had felt earlier when she had first cast magic on her own was a result of accessing her second gate in the makeshift manner rather than the way the Sharasi had done through meditation. She wished it was safe to travel to the East, oh the things that they would be able to teach her...

Lucia looked up suddenly, her small wisp of fire was bobbing above her placidly, yet she smelled what could possibly be something burning. Perhaps it was those men that they had seen fighting before! Had they discovered their mission and sought to burn the academy down with them in it? With a heavy heart she ripped out the illustrations from the tome putting them into her handbag, there was no way that she'd be able to carry everything in their flight, and she ran out the door. What she saw wasn't her worst nightmare, though she was mildly displeased (though one could never tell from her doe-like expression).

"Thank goodness" she said with a sigh; upon seeing the box, and putting two and two together while looking at the shattered and scorched remains of the resins. "Khast, you must be careful," she said crouching over the box, which she thought she sense a faint energy signature from within, and examining the charred remains. "These look like resins, my father had a small collection, handed down from generation to generation from when my ancestors studied under Leto. My mother made him get rid of them though, she feared them breaking open and burning the town down. We were lucky that these didn't work as potently as they should have." Re-examining the box, she looked at it suspiciously, not wanting to touch it herself "This must be the box that Gonye wanted us to look for. I suppose our mission here is done," she got up dusting her skirt off, "Though before we go, I think we should examine the rest of the rooms, there are a lot of valuable things here that could help us." She said "us", though she really meant herself, not in a mean manner, but in a hopeful way. The tales of the Sharasi's potency in magic excited her beyond imagination.

That being said, she went to the next room she said that she wanted to visit: Enchantments and Magical Focuses. Perhaps if she had even more time, she would return to the tome room to read more on enchantments or even lineages. This was perhaps the last time they'd ever get to see this place again, and she wasn't going to miss out on such a prized opportunity.

From the time Lucia entered the room to when she moved on, Erratus knelt on the floor running his hands through what was left of his loot. He was on the verge of tears, and most of what the girl had said was lost on him. It took all his resolve to lift himself from the floor and carry on. He placed the remaining resins in his pockets as well, lest he accidentally trigger or lose more of them.

His earlier enthusiasm greatly diminished, the thief stalked off toward one of the three remaining rooms, Documents and Records.

Documents and Records
Scrolls, parchment and loose pages spread in and across dozens of tables, cabinets, and drawers. Surely this would be the room that would raise Erratus spirits after he had torched most of his treasures like a fool Absolutely nothing within this room was of any use to Erratus, the illiterate more than likely could not even comprehend the sheer amount of raw a precious information that was right in front of him. Thankfully a faint sound in the distance drew Erratus attention away from the room, a rattling noise. For just a moment Erratus could hear the rattle of chains not far from where he was standing, but just as soon as the sound had started it ended leaving an eerie silence in its place. After a few moments of silence another rattle sounded again, though this time it was slightly louder and Erratus could easily discern where it was coming from: just down the hall from where he stood, the room that sat alone at the furthest end of the vault.

____________

Enchantments and Magical Focuses

The Enchantments and Focus room was far different than the room Lucia had previously visited, this chamber was much longer, it was long enough to be a hall in its own right. The room was also covered in large banner like flags which hung down from the ceiling with each banner being covered in a unique sigil, it was unclear what each sigil meant but none of them resembled anything more than complex arrays and odd symbols. Built into each side of the front end of the hall's walls were large drawers which were spaced very evenly together with each drawer being labeled one of the following: Natural Arcane, Unnatural Arcane, Basic Elementalism, Planetary Elementalism, Miracles and Invocation. The back end of the room was decorated with a collection of tables covered with ink wells filled with odd looking coloured ink and talisman sized pieces of parchment. Around the tables there were few dozens chairs and around those chairs a few glass cases holding gloves, rings, necklaces, and large ring like 'weapons', each of them marked with odd sigils and arrays.

_____

Nero nearly leaped from his skin as the corpse-like man approached him in the streets of the square, alone in the streets of the square. Pulling his back away from the pool and bringing himself from the ground Nero nervously backed himself away from the stranger a few steps before taking a deep breath and opening his mouth to 'greet' him, but when he attempted to speak his voice would not cooperate and for good reason. Just what as he going to say to this man? Who was he? Was he someone to even be caught conversing with? Was he even a human being? A flurry of questions bombarded Nero's mind, thankfully a voice off in the distance interrupted his uneasy mind.

"I see you found yourself a friend, and just who is he?" The voice belonged to one of Gonye's mercenaries who had accompanied Nero and Nadya south when they were split Erratus and Lucia. The lightly armoured mercenary approached Nero, dropped his hand onto his shoulder and leaned over him to get a better look at their new company.

"Oi-" the mercenary started as he continued to lean forward. "Gonna' stand there all day? Just what are ya' doing here?"
