The Amanuensis by Monuments
Preview: Origin of Escape

Monuments is a djent group that I only had on my calendar because they're opening for Devin Townsend at a show I'm hoping to catch in a couple of weeks

I don't think they're bad at all but most of the music is fairly standard djent fare, which doesn't do much for me. That said the album has a few really high points, like a brief a capella intro to the track Saga City, but that part and most others tend to devolve into standard djenty bits after a few

I think they'll make a cool live show but I don't think this is an album I'll spin again

Neurosis - The Word as Law

this is like a trashy punk record released in 1991, it's old and doesn't sound good to me, and well it's kinda boring...

Shigeto - New Crossings

Shigeto is one of my favorite beatmakers and I very much enjoy his first two albums, but had never gotten around to listening to this EP of his. I listened to it and enjoyed it, it seems to mostly be ideas/drafts that could fit easily into his sophomore LP, Lineage. Calm and mellow bloops and bleeps, very comfy and cozy and cool. Recommended to any fans of instrumental hip hop or electronic music.

7/10. I liked Winter Thaw. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZftnU7PG08

0hbliv - SLPHNC2
More bleeps and beats, similar to Knxwledge. Most of it is just pleasant, some of the tracks are nicer and stand out a bit. Overall this is decent elevator music.

6/10. http://ohbliv.bandcamp.com/album/slphnc2 preview it there

i love aesop so god damn much.

that album was great, i think None Shall Pass is my favourite album by him, but everything he's done is gold, and it feels like your a literary critic when you try to get meaning from his lyrics. that's a modern day shakespeare right there.

None Shall Pass is awesome, prob my fav. Coffee & Pigs are the bestttttt

vegetables - thedaybeforetheday

another really obscure one. belarusian electronic music.
I'm a huge sucker for this kind of stuff & it was free so i got it. never listened to hard to it because they a crazy good album after this one.

This is their first album and it's first album quality compared to their other 2. a lot of the tracks are just flat out average. there's a few really amazing tracks though, and it's not like it's not like a bad listen. they experiment with a lot of different sounds, so it doesn't get boring. lo-fi and noise elements, pure ambience, mad dancin electronic sounds & samples. there's some really weird s*** that reminds me of the stuff i make to entertain myself.

experimental album that gives me varying levels of enjoyment
6/10
they took it off their bandcamp but it's still free on last.fm to listen/download

Andrew Jackson Jihad - People That Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World

This is a cool a** folk-punk record and I love it. Vocals and lyrics are great, it's short and sweet like all their other work, has great instrumentation and is very catchy, really fun record right here

The Sad Bastard Book Club - Another Family Dinner At The Saturn Residence Ends In Tears
Featuring 150~ character song titles like "Mr. Badgerface Would Like to Propose a Solution to Your Problem That Requires Him Eating One of Your Children. Are You Okay With the Terms of This Agreement? Excellent, Then Let's Continue." and "You Get An 'A' for Effort, But Burning a Pile of Physics Books Won't Curry Favor With the Gods of Construction. It Will Only Piss Off the Laws of Nature "

"Doom folk" describes this band perfectly. The album has a really depressing feel. The lyrics are dark and are sung with multiple deep depressing voices. They got like a dozen random people to help supply voices in this actually. So it's an amateur choir singing to really heavy & loud but low tempo music. I wish I was a music smartypants so I could describe how this album sounds and why I love it but I'm dumb so all I can say is I think it's amazing. If I didn't have This Binary Universe on my list this would be the best album I've listened to this month without a doubt.

10/10 i want a physical copy of this so bad
try this out https://sadbastardbookclub.bandcamp.com ... o-20-years

MaxNormal.TV - Good Morning South Africa

This is an album from big Watty before he was making money world wide as Ninja from Die Antwoord.

South African hip-hop w/ some energetic electronic instrumentals. Lyrics are mostly comedic or them not taking themselves seriously & are in English and Afrikaans. There's a lot of skits and weird pieces here and there. They are definitely unique, and that's something they capitalized on and eventually made it with.

I'm pretty split on this album. I don't plan on listening to the full album again any time soon but I do enjoy some of the tracks

5/10 not recommended but there's some tracks I'd send to friends

this sums up how the album sounds
this is completely different from the rest of the album but it's like super amazing track

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
Preview would be pointless since the whole album is two 20+ minute tracks

This album is interesting, to say the least. For a lot of its runtime I feel like it's not going anywhere and it's kinda wasting my time with "look how odd this is" prog rock s***, but then something legitimately interesting happens and I realize I've been really enjoying this album's journey as a whole. It's slinging me around for a f*** ride and I think I like it???

I recommend everyone who likes prog rock a little give this one listen, cause it's a f*** of an album.

Rating: Good!

I've never seen The Exorcist

Today:
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me by Brand New
Preview: Sowing Season (Yeah)

I heard the preview track in a guitar hero game a few years back and wasn't really impressed because at the time I was just waiting to get to the Iron Maiden song so I could meedly weedly weedly *sick trills*

Listening to it now though it's a really good track. I like the vocals & songwriting on this album a lot, as well as the variety of different styles it approaches throughout its runtime. The preview shows how loud & agressive the album can be, and also how quiet it is at other parts.

By now you probably have realized I'm not great at lengthy "reviews", but what I'm trying to say is this album caught me by surprise. It's really neat! Kinda like the way I felt about Illinois

I guess /mu/ was right again?!?!?

Halfaxa by Grimes

I like Grimeth work. Her muthic hath a dark but charming atmothphere that I really enjoy. I almotht never actively lithten to her muthic, though. Uthually it'th jutht background muthic, but it'th really pretty nonetheleth.

Halfactha ithn't ath initially charming ath her earlier album Vithionth, but I do think they're both enjoyable albumth.

Rating: Good!

I'm not making fun of her.

Okay, maybe a little.

Nhor - Within The Darkness Between The Starlight

Leading up to this album was a personal journey for me. I found Nhor by browsing youtube and finding the title track, I was needless to say, blown the f*** away. I instantly searched up the artist and found Nhor, then found out his albums go in an order as there is a box set of his music, so I decided to go in order, this album being the last of 4, the first time I added the album I was expecting some black metal, I was in for a surprise when it turned out to be dark folk and ambient music, it also happens to be really, really good. So I accept it and decide to listen to the second album later, I do, and it is also very good, albeit a bit more reserved. That's ok, I go to the third album after, and then take my first bite into Nhor's black metal. Well, he didn't find his sound in this album, the black metal wasn't very good. I was disappointed, but I knew that the next album will be good, and now here I am...

I was right! This thing is a f*** beast. The intro track A Forest Draped In Moonlight is a nice, calm intro to lead into the main track, the album flips between piano sections and black metal sections, both beautiful in execution. Amazing song writing and atmosphere is to be had here, Rohmet Etarnu is actually a metal version of the song Giantess off of his first album, it turned out brilliant, and it really shows how Nhor can take harsh black metal and pretty ballads and make them come to equilibrium.

This album is pure bliss even in its harsh moments, listen to this record if this stuff interests you, people!

9/10

Agent Fresco - A Long Time Listening

Term recommended this to me, and told me it was cool as f***. Well, it's cool as f***. So this band is a pretty cool mix, having lots of indie, art, and math rock blends with some pretty metal-y riffs scattered around with frequent piano ballads and even some electronics here and there. This album really is coherent with a vocalist with a lovely voice, usually singing very nicely, but sometimes pulls in the growls into the heavy moments, and does them well, it's pretty accessible, too, the album has some super calm songs, the album is very well put together, the production is great, the song writing is strong, you get some very decent and pleasant all around rock here.

I enjoyed this album loads, 8/10!

Lots of cool albums this week, I enjoyed the stuff from: The Devin Townsend Band, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Nhor, and Agent Fresco. Damn, that's a fair bit.

(Will upload Calendar tomorrow)

Planet of Ice by Minus the Bear
Preview: Burying Luck

Dunno what to think of this album really. It's an indie rock/math rock (i think nix said that at some point?) record that i blind picked from nixter. I don't really think it's my kind of album. Just not doing much for me, idk. I could see people really enjoying it but I don't think the band is for me I suppose.

I did listen to their album Omni a couple of years back and felt kind of the same way, but that album did have this track called My Time on it which is a fantastic pop song (neat video too)

Rating: Okay
