OK, so I'm here to learn how to Mac program, and am really here to find some guidance from the older Mac programmers here on where to begin. I mean, what languages do I need to learn? I'm thinking of learning something like Python first, then moving to some more complex stuff like C later. But also Java doesn't seem too hard. Etcetera, etcetera, and etcetera.
Thanks.

Start from the basics of procedural C programming. Once you master using pointers, manually allocating memory and the most common data structures, go on to Java or C++ for some OO related programming.

thai's advice is probably the best - C is a good 40 years old now, and as such it forces you to do most of the work, especially with memory. you'll learn a s*** and if you at least get a grasp on it, everything will be alot easier from there

Hmm, starting with C. I've never heard that before. I've normally heard that for Macintosh it's better to start with Python (in fact, I've always heard Python, nothing but). But whatever you say.

You normally hear Linux is best for programming but that doesn't stop me from using Windows. Also Python is very lax with syntax and does a lot of things for you. You do not want to take anything for granted since it leads to bad programming.

Yes, but I do not feel like getting a new OS just to program. Also, wouldn't it be better to take things for granted at first, then move on and when it gets more advanced, "remove the training wheels" as you might say?

P.S. Read the game you're currently playing. Very cute.

pls read what we tell you when you ask for help

that idea of yours is bad because it will lead to you encountering a WHOLE lot of stuff you dont understand later on down the track, which we previously mentioned - memory allocation, pointers, low level programming, etc. python does stuff like memory allocation and garbage collection FOR you, and furthermore you dont learn about defining variable types as it is dynamically typed. it is also annoying as you learn indentation which has VERY little application in later languages

take this from somebody who learnt Python as a first language - its like reading half an instruction manual

learn C, an incredibly powerful language to get the basics. it is unforgiving, you will learn much

THEN proceed onto languages depending on your needs - do you want to script? python/perl will help you

do you want to write games? C --> C++ is a relatively easy transition

do you want a clean language where everything will work with little dependencies? java has the answer

the point is DONT START WITH EASY.

Sorry to be nit-picky (grammar teacher ftw), but you know you didn't capitalize a single one of your paragraphs?

How is that relevant? If he conveyed the information you're looking for coherently, what does it matter? You seem to beating around the bush an awful lot for somebody who wants to learn a thing.

No, I didn't mean it like that. Just as a side-note. I understand what you said and I will be googling for some tuts later today.
