Players want to be able to play at their best, and people want to see players play at their best. Why would you prevent people from playing their best character?

No, it does not force people to improve their skills. If picking up a secondary character is advantageous, they can already do so. In fact, allowing people to figure out when they need to use a secondary gives the game actual competitive depth. Preventing them from playing the character they want to does not.

Hilariously, being able to ban someone's main would result in much more use of top tier characters. I really don't think you've thought this through at all. To be successful with a sub-optimal character, you need to dedicate a lot of practice and focus to it. If someone banned your main in a set, do you really thing you'd go to that kind of character as your secondary? No, you'd pick top tier character.

Also your whole premise makes no sense. Melee is quite balanced among the viable characters and you can do well with any of them - it mostly comes down to preference. We see pretty fair representation for a good spread of characters.

Basically you're proposing a solution that everyone would hate, would reduce depth, would actually make the "problem" worse, and isn't solving something that's a real problem to begin with.

And all I'm getting is 2 forms of feedback:

1.) Banning is stupid

2.)Banning prevents people from playing their mains/preferred character.
_{Boo-hoo, I'm sure people counterpick because they suddenly changed who they like as well}

And all I suggested is that it would force people to broaden their horizons when it comes to the range of characters they pick. But I know there is more to this. And so I belabor this because all I'm getting is the same sorts of rejection. I know that there's more to this.

This is what I wanted to see. And thank you for at least explaining it thoroughly instead of stonewalling the topic. Only one thing... Who isn't a viable character, then? Does the existence of viable characters cut the roster to even smaller competitive proportions?

And... uh... guys? I asked, and I quote, "if character bans per were allowed per round to every competitor... how do you guys think the competitive Smash scene would look?"

I never said "HEY GAIZ WE SHOULD HAVE BANS BECAUSE REASONS," because I wanted to know why bans weren't a thing.

If characters were banned then competetive Smash would be a f*** joke. Simple.

You do not get people to use other characters by banning characters. People use other characters because they want to. If that's not something you like, boo f*** boo.

Except for the fact that we just did, and yet you refuse to not have the last word in this converation you just tried to exit. Faceless Void did a pretty good job of putting the grand scale of it in view for me, and you're still saying the same-old same-old.

If anything beside the logic behind not banning characters was made apparent, its that at least you intrigued enough by the subject to keep bashing it at every given chance. Which is okay, since I got what I wanted from my question.
