It is quite difficult to find good animes nowadays.
Some of the better ones are:
Saki
Kobato
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (and all it's other seasons)
But that's just me. Apparently Code Geass was decent but I don't really like it, too many fanboys.

The more popular anime are the Shonen or mecha ones.
Some early sentai ones too, but those are the two main styles of anime that are the most popular and liked.
