Welcome to Monotnous' Showroom!

I'll be adding more and more Sprites for great MG users, such as yourself, to admire. These sprites were made to be seen and I am kind and generous enough to let the good people of MG experience my sprites. I create sprites under a "What you see is what you get" style of service meaning that every spec of detail that the Sprited character has in official Artwork/Models will be exactly what will be included in my sprite.

So long as you are not a plagiarist (someone who steals other people's work and claims it as their own) and you have a clean reputation here then I'm glad to have you here :D . Please, to remind the thieves out there, these sprites are made by me and have been recognised as my work. Using these elsewhere or re-posting them in your own topic without giving credit will most likely result in a shunning and shaming from the MG community. You have been warned! I will most likely decline any chance at an apology or redemption request if you break these rules, or the rules of the forum or any other reason.

As you can see by your scrollbar, there will soon be a hell of a lot of sprites on this post and the layout isn't exactly easy to navigate in. So for your convenience, use Control+F and type in one of the following section headers below to find that section:

  • Super Mario Bros
  • Star Fox
  • Metroid
  • Legend of Zelda
  • Banjo & Kazooie
  • Spectrobes

I think that the best way to introduce myself would be showing of some of my sprite work. Here they are, in no particular order:

(If you've taken the time to look at them, then I know what you're thinking. Yea, they're all based on the Nintendo 64)

Anyway, thanks for checking this out. I know most of you are waaaaaay better than me, so I appreciate some constructive criticism :D

Quite interesting. Looks good. Welcome to the forums, btw.

One question though, are these traced, or are they done from scratch? Just curious, still pretty cool looking.

Hope you enjoy the forums~

Thanks for the warm welcome, appreciate it.
And no, they aren't traced. I make them from scratch while looking at a reference picture.
(Usually a screenie from my N64 emulator)

Well, that old Fox sprite of mine was bugging me A LOT, so here's a redone, revised version:
(still based on the N64 version)

Image

Also, I've shrunk the sprites down. They were too big for their own good...

~OP updated~

EDIT: I forgot to say, I want your opinion for my next sprite. I want to make sprites of all the original smash64 characters, but I also want to do characters that are high in demand. The choice is yours, from either:
KIRBY, PIKACHU, BANJO/KAZOOIE, RAYMAN

Rayman/Banjo would be nice. And the Fox sprite is indeed better than previously.

My next sprite has been confirmed as Banjo & Kazooie. I don't have any teasers or anything so far though.

To keep you guys interested, I've completely updated the style of the First post. It looks great, and much
cleaner IMO. Check it out :)

I'm sorry to say, but it looks like you just took the N64 3D models and slapped some filters on them. The outlines could be smoother and you often seem to use pillow-shading (which generally doesn't work out too well). I'm not sure if you actually do filter the models or if you sprite them from the ground up but I think you could improve upon the fundamentals of outlining, shading and colour studies with these.

No, don't worry, that isn't what I do, but how would that even work? (Sorry, if that's a redundant question, I'm kinda new to this)

Yes, I know. I've been told this multiple times, and have tried to stray away from it, but I could never understand why it's
that big of a problem. Not trying to be rude or anything, but surely having the light-source shining straight onto the character
isn't any different to it shining from somewhere around it?

Thanks for the tips man. Outlining, I understand, and by shading I assume you mean the pillow shading problem. What of the
"colour studies" though. Could I ask you to exaggerate?

If pillow shading is what you want to use then obviously you're free to- it's your art after all, so you should make it the way you like it. It's just that pillow shading more often than not leads to someone adding way too many shades and the sprite ending up looking 'fuzzy'.

Regarding your second question- what I'd like to see more in your art is more consistency in the contrast of your shades and the amount of shades you use on a surface. On your earlier works certain areas (Link's tunic for example) were completely unshaded whereas other areas had more shades. This leads to an inconsistent end result. You've been getting better at this if I'm looking at Banjo though, but it's still something I'd like to tell you to keep in mind.

Consistancy right now still appears to be somewhat of an issue, try to keep the contrast between your shades similair and also the amount of shades(/colours) you use on a surface. If you can work on that your work will appear more well-rounded and colourful.

Also re: the 3D-model thing, you can take a 3D model and then compress it and reduce the amount of colours. Older games like Donkey Kong Country often used this technique.

The technique is often labeled as "posterize." It's actually an effect within most paint programs. It seems you did just that however.

You could use 3 tones for each part (each one separated by 3 tones)

I know I'm horrible at explaining, so, I'll make prints.
Up one = yours. Down one = right way.
