Anyways Super Mario 3DS is going to use gyroscope, guessing it's role is the camrea.
Super Mario, along with other first-party titles to come well most likely prove that 3D is not a gimmick. I mean honestly most third-party developers don't know how to use a system very well on there first try! 3DS has more to it Pilotwings Resort is a great example.

It's a gimmick, but it can work. Anyways, I didn't buy a 3ds to go OMG 3-D PRETTY! I bought it to play some freaking games <_<

Put in a QR code and Mii image on a post, and anyone can scan it from the computer.

3D isn't a gimmick, it's an enhancement. That's what I like about it.
And yeah, the QR code detection works surprisingly quickly and accurately. Even from another screen, you really only have to point the camera at the image for half a second and it reads it.

If it was a gimmick nintendo would force it heaps within the games, a la the mandatory wiimote waggle.
It's an optional enhancement.
