Actually, Runouw's planning on putting 2 things into the engine, one of which is already fairly far in development:

A character designer and a level designer. Based on the hugely successful level designer portal in his previous game, Super Mario 63, it's a fair assumption that this one would have a strong userbase to add content.

The one thing hindering progress is the slow rate of progression on the side of the Spriter's Resource.

No he is working on a different project right now and hes waiting for spriters resource to finish some new sprites but they are not close to being done.

And his spriters are from TSR?

Interesting, but I don't see how that would hold uo his game/progress...

No, far from it. tSR is going for a "quality over quantity" approach, and Gooey is still being actively worked on. They're also taking this character at a time, so they can focus all efforts on one specific sheet.

Also, school and stuff gets in the way of work for a lot of these spriters.
