Well if you want a slightly (VERY slightly) "serious" version of the wasteland, just don't pick it. Although it leads into the Holy Hand Grenades and Alien Blaster, so eh.

Well you get a very good gun where the alien blaster would have been if you didn't pick it. And there isn't a limited supply of ammo for it unlike the alien blaster.
