Welp, the 1.9 pre release is out. Kind of lackluster.
There are some new items though, not sure what any of them do. Blaze Rod, Ghast Tear, and some unnamed gold nugget thing.

So apparently you can craft snowmen that come to life and follow you around like adorable pets
I hope they gain the ability to throw snowballs
Way better than wolves

They already can throw snowballs, and do so at any mob. However the snowballs do no damage, and also anger the mob, so if you run into a creeper, your Snowman buddy is gone.
