Closer to the Heavens
Setting: show
In a land much like ours laid a continent. This continent was primarily inhabited by men, much like Earth and if any further comparisons had to be made it would resemble North East Asia during its feudal periods. Geographically, it was surrounded by the ocean from three sides. On the eastern end was a great mountain range which was practically impenetrable. Further east were lands rumored to be fertile and unclaimed. The only base where fools would attempt the crossing was at the base of a waterfall that flowed down from the highest peaks, in the shadow Heaven’s Watch the tallest amongst them.

From this waterfall, the river snaked through the rolling steppes and finally emptying to the southwestern end of the continent. As such, two of the three major nations that occupied the continent made their home there.

Those that claimed the banks of the rivers around the steppes were the Shokun Empire. It is currently ruled by the Child Emperor, Shokun II who ascended after his father’s recent passing. For fear of so much power to a single man, two men have been appointed as regents. The commander of the Empire’s military, Shogun Beniyama Daisuke was one; the spiritual leader of the Empire, Master Adjudicator Hohoemi Shiranui was the other. These two men represented the two greatest factors that governed the lives of the people of Shokun; martial prowess and religion. The Empire was a militaristic nation, much more so that its neighbours; having little peers in this regard. Famed for their mastery of cavalry and infantry, the Empire could and did in fact have regular contests of martial arts; even for children. To mistake the Empire for a culture of violent savages would be a great mistake as the glue that binds the populace together was religion. Practically all of the citizens believed in the One and True God, who sits atop Heaven’s Watch and judged one’s worth as one lived their life. Those who were deemed worthy or not were handed different fates once they died.

As with all religions, there have been lengthy disputes to the interpretation of divine mandate. Given the militaristic nature of the Empire this has ended up as a ritual war between the two main schools of martial arts and thought. These ritual wars were decided not by body count but by an impartial adjudicator, a custodian of the religion, or for smaller skirmishes, an adjutant.

And then there was the issue of those who were Weh no Su. A term from an older tongue, it translated roughly as “Closer to the Heavens.” What was special about Weh no Su was their usual skill in exorcism and other matters of spirituality. Such powers come at a price, ranging from mild nausea to a slow and painful death. Weh no Su bear a common mark somewhere on their dominant arm (truly ambidextrous Weh no Su are seen with two marks), that of a lily in bloom, and it was said that those that had bigger marks were meant to die young though this has not always been the case. Becoming Weh no Su is no different than drawing a winning lot. Often than not, many are born as Weh no Su, their marks clear from birth while other times grown men and women are seen to suddenly grasp their arm as if on fire and discover a blooming lily etched on it. Regardless of their origin, Weh no Su have a place in the Empire’s society regardless of how they choose to live. Many, seeking to further understand the mystery behind their powers choose to become people of cloth, using their powers to serve the One and True God, while others may simple decide to live normal, peaceful lives. Those that choose the path of a criminal usually end up deader than cicadas at summer’s end. After all, they were men and women too and even if there were some jealousy, respect would equal it.

Thankfully, there were not many threats that specifically required a Weh no Su to act. Of note there was only one, spirits of the deceased would often stalk the lands. They were known by many names, Yure was one that was most common, to the south, Singh and to the north, Khiimori. When immaterial, they took various recognisable forms, otherwise, their material manifestation resembled a beetle with sizeable jaws that stood upright with a fur lined back. The carapace of their material bodies was harder than steel, even the joints were like unbreakable chainmail yet it was a shiny obsidian colour. However, they still remained vulnerable from behind as their backs were lined with brown fur. Yure, in their physical form, were as diverse as any species, retaining only the armoured chitin and vulnerable backs as a common trait. The immaterial bodies however, were far more dangerous as they could possess and take control of still living humans and animals. Side effects of this vary but it is certain that many who are possessed have glazed and immobile eyes. Only Weh no Su could exorcise and then return the spirit to wherever they come. These spirits could only possess one person and once they are driven out they become relatively harmless regardless of their original intentions. Some of the more amiable spirits coexist with whoever tolerated their presence.

With all this mention of spirits, it could be said that there was something magical about this land. This was not completely inaccurate. It was simply just the power of a belief and the blessings of God taking form. Such blessings usual resided in weapons and items as the Weh no Su were usually the only ones who could manifest amongst other things, forceful gales, superior strength and greater endurance. This power was drawn from the conviction of the wielder and usually produced effects associated with the name of the item.

The Journey East
That was a night to remember. Hakone burnt to the ground by Yure of uncountable numbers and of enormous size. By the grace of God and by the heroic actions of a few, many were saved. The temple still stood by the end of the battle, thanks to the timely intervention of the Midnight Riders from Tartariya. The price paid included the death of Hohoemi Shiranui's sworn brother, Onimodo Kutama. There was to be a ritual war this day but with the adjutant gone and the dead and dying still being attended to, everyone had put that to the back of their minds.

The loss of the adjutant hit the religious community hard. They knew him as a honorable man, one who stayed behind to delay the great beast that devoured the town. He had bought them enough time. But even amongst those at the temple, his death could not be more sorrowful to Hohoemi Suzu. Though many others had discounted her love for him as a childish crush, he was more than that to her. It was also the letter that was due for him that roused her to seek answers.

Master Adjudicator Hohoemi had requested his sworn brother and his adopted sister's presence at Heaven's Watch in the far east. It was about finding a cure for Suzu, who had been afflicted by a weak constitution all her life. One could not ignore the summon of someone of his station so the temple had made arrangements her journey east. The three wagon caravan would take her east, through the treacherous highlands ridden with bandits, thieves and worse, Yure. Given her status, they had accrued a good escort, or what could be considered one in the short amount of time and manpower they had. As night began to fall, the caravan was completely assembled.

"Turning my back to the lit-up town, the path I shall follow is an endless wasteland. There are no miracles or signs. Only the night extends before me. I feed on the unwavering spirit and forge my way through the dark journey."

Muttering something that Kutama had taught her to steel herself, Suzu took her seat next to Yamaken Akane the caravan master and her temporary guardian. With a clank, the cart she was riding moved and headed eastwards.

Fighting Styles
  • The Science of Eight Limbs: This style from Talay does not shy away from weapons but the core of it remains as an unarmed style. Employing knees, kicks, elbows and fists to maximize the destructive potential of a human it leaves opponents broken, battered, dead or dying. The Science of Eight Limbs is also one of the oldest styles.
  • Krabi Krabong: Weapon fighting style originating the country of Talay. Utilizing a cutting sabre in the main hand and an equally long stick (usually the scabbard) in the off hand, this style emphasizes simultaneous attack and defence, with the intention to kill in one hit. This is more an offshoot of the Science of Eight Limbs but its history is nearly as long, no doubt developing along side the former.
  • Tartariyan Wrestling: A style of grappling originating from the northern lands of the Tartariya. Bringing down foes, especially those that are large, before finishing them off with finishing strikes and holds are a specialty. Those caught unwary by the primal looking stance are in for a rude surprise as it is possibly one of the most stable. Wrestlers maintain a low profile allowing them greater stability on which to launch their attacks.
  • Winged Man of the Mesa: This is not the true name of the style since it is the one used in Tartariyan military doctrine for their elite cavalry. Students are taught archery, swordsmanship and use of a lance, both on horseback and on foot. Little else is known as battlefield accounts are rare and most of the style is shrouded in myth.
  • Way of Balance: A style originating from one of the two warring sects of Shokun religion, the Way of Balance is notable for having two styles in one. Men and women are taught diametrically opposed styles. It is the union of the two style and practitioners that define the philosophy of opposites achieving balance, of which the style is named. A notable offshoot is the Maiden Supreme Swordsmanship which combines in to one, straight swords, two lovers and a harmonious yet formidable style of fighting. Fortunately, this offshoot is rather small as straight swords are not mass produced in Shokun.
  • Triumvirate School: The other sect of Shogun religion believes in humans possessing three characters. Notable for its three stances, that of Virtue, Perseverance and Sin, it can theoretically be applied to any weapon, even unarmed. Each stance has its own philosophy and application. The stance of Virtue favours non-violence, with the user pointing their weapons away and using it only to deflect and defend. The stance of Perseverance favours survival and thus simultaneous defence and attack; a useful and balanced stance. Finally, the stance of Sin is one of calculated viciousness to the point of ignoring defence to land a blow.

Other Countries
Talay and its capital sit at the delta of the river that flows through Shokun. Roughly to the south west, its lands encompass what Shokun does not to the south. Travel south enough from the main river bank and you would suddenly find yourself in the country of Talay. Its people were darker skinned, but not much more than those of Shokun, and were mostly traders. Those were not merchants could easily be part of Talay’s navy. Goods had to be shipped to the other side of the continent after all and with all many of dangers associated with the crossing, there had to be some protection. Rightly so as Talay itself means “the Sea.” Consequently, many males from Talay know a good measure of the Science of Eight Limbs, an iconic fighting style used as self defence. Rarely do their regular barges sail upriver, but when they do, it is usually as a cruise ship of some sort, bringing wealthy men and women who delight in Shokun’s ritual wars or “Blood Sport” as it was known in their tongue. However, living in such a mercantile and at times, opulent environment, trustworthiness and Talay are an ocean apart if there is no payment of some kind being arranged.

Ages ago, there were great rivers and the land that is now known as Tartariya was probably underneath the sea level at some point. Now it is home to a civilization of s****, nomads, inventors and assassins hidden among the canyons’ nooks and crannies. The aspect of Tartariya that the world sees most is the s**** though. Horses are usually necessary to leap over chasms and canyons that men could not. Many sport a wooden frame running up from the saddle with feathers on it like a wing and they are some of the best cavalrymen in the world. The Shokun called these winged s**** the Hayaijin. Their capital is translated as Black Mesa, a single, wide and round mesa that had been hollowed out and used as a city. Surrounding it was a relatively wide plain and even then, there was no other geological formation taller in sight. No one could challenge the Black Mesa without being spotted from faraway. Even then, they would have to brave the lands of opportunistic raiders and a certain order of assassins who have made their home in this unforgiving landscape. Men and women however, live in almost their own societies, coming only together for family occasions such as marriage or funerals. Men are usually hairless save for a top knot which they grow and adorn with their family marked decorations. They are the warriors and protectors of Tartariya. The women on the other hand, handle almost everything from the household to innovation to spirituality. Though women handle greater positions of power, there has never been much of a power struggle between men and women as infighting did nothing to help cope in the brutal lands they lived. As such, Tartariyans never refuse help and are immensely loyal. If one owed their life to another, they would serve dutifully and even close friends could become like family members.

Naming Conventions
  • Shokun names follow a Family then Given name format. Japanese names recommended.
  • Talay names follow a Given then Family name format. Chinese or South East Asian names recommended.
  • Tartariya follows a Given names, Patronymic then Family name format. Manchurian or Mongolian names recommended.
  • Fighting Style names should be at least indicative, descriptive or related to its specialty in some way.
  • Weapon names can be flowery and poetic. Be careful lest you do it poorly.

Example character sheet: show
Name: Hohoemi Suzu
Age: Out of childhood
Combat Style/Weapon: The Balancer School of Maiden Supreme Swordsmanship is perhaps one of the smallest of the Balancer martial arts schools. It is a style primarily focused on training noble daughters of the Empire with a straight sword so that they may accompany their would-be husbands where ever they may go. Mastery would of course only come from the young woman and her lover harmonising their styles, and thus becoming an unstoppable duo in combat. It only worked because of the trust that lovers had in their relationship. A master and student would have the latter be too subservient, best friends would be too reserved and so on. Weapons in Suzu's possession are the late Onimodo Kutama's standard length katana called Whimsical Hurricane, in bright blue, cloudless sky and her own straight sword slightly longer than her own arm called River God Peach, she who holds the very reigns of the world.
Present Appearance: Suzu's hair flows freely down past her waist, it is black and the locks on the sides are tied with a crisscrossing red ribbon. Her hakama are red and her haori is white. Suzu is in effect, a miniature version of a shrine priestess, or Miko. She stands are a normal height for a youth her age, and that makes her about chest height to a grown man. Though she is out of childhood, her body still lacks womanly curves. Perhaps in a few more years her beauty will shine, allowing men to indulge in the sight of her and not be called a deviant.
Why your character is accompanying the caravan east:Her brother's letter had bid Kutama and her to come speak to him about matters regarding her terminal illness. However Kutama was dead and she had miraculously recovered. There was no longer a need to speak to Hohoemi Shiranui about her health. Instead, now she sought answers to the attack. The night God had taken Kutama in to his fold, and why. Surely the head of the Empire's religious body would have answers.

Why your character is accompanying the caravan east:She was the assistant master of the temple's martial arts division. Notable students include Sasaki Mitsuki, one of the first in the defense of the temple on that fateful night and Hohoemi Suzu, heiress of the Balancer school of Maiden Supreme Swordsmanship. The former was a model student the latter, a problem child and one that she had decided to take care of temporarily until Suzu was returned to the Hohoemi household.

Shu utilizes a variety of the drunken form specific to Cài Lǐ Fó that focuses on distraction techniques and the generation of power using momentum. Name: Nari
Age: 47
Combat Style/Weapon: Nari is a long time criminal, he has stolen and kill many, many times, he is a master of the art of improvisation, so he can take advantage of things, but if he is caught off guard, and can't assess the situation, he will have to rely on whatever he can pick up, a rock, a chair, etc. although he isn't very good in those situations, so he likes to rely on other members of his group to use their more focused fighting to finish off an alerted enemy. But when it boils down to his preferred weapon of take down, he likes his trusty pocket knife, which has 1. A small sharp blade, used to silently kill enemies, although terrible in a head on fight 2. A small compartment on the side with a very thin, yet sharp metal sliver of metal, used to throw at an enemy to puncture their veins, good for distractions 3. On the whole left side of the knife, it has 4 flat sheets overlapping each other, which can be folded out to make a 4by4 inch shield. It isn't very practical, but can block well if you are quick enough.
Present Appearance: Nari isn't a typical 47 year old, he is short, not very buff but defined muscles, he is left handed and he has long, curly brown hair, he has no facial hair.
Why your character is accompanying the caravan east: To steal what he can find.

Name: Sasaki Mitsuki
Age: 17
Fighting Style: She is well accomplished in the art of tessenjutsu though her shinto upbringing has allowed her to become well versed in the mystic arts, invoking the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
Weapon: Two war fans constructed of metal bindings and painted pale pink to give the appearance of regular fans. Thus they are named, "Dancing sakura kisses bring forth blood"
Present Appearance: Mitsuki's hair is a dark brown bordering auburn in colour and tied with a white band producing a long ponytail. Her eyes are brown, a lively expression seemingly emanating from them. Her complexion is fair, having spent more days indoors than out while in her youth. Her body is slim and delicate though toned through training. She wears a furisode kimono which is sky blue and depicts a blossoming tree on it. Due to her long sleeves, she is able to hide both her metal war fans which hang from each of her wrists. Despite what one may believe by simply looking at her clothing, she can move quickly with her kimono on. A light green obi with decorative pink petals is tied into a neat bow around her waist. On her feet she wears white jika-tabi which allows her quick and agile movement after she kicks off her zori.
Reason for moving east:Mitsuki feels burdened with a great debt. Had she not left Onimodo Kutama to face the giant Yure alone, perhaps he would have still be alive. She felt that it was her fault that Suzu had been torn from the man she loved, and for that she would do her best to aid the girl as much as she could. As an exorcist of note, the caravan was pleased to take her aboard, should they be encroached upon by malevolent spirits.

Name: Suzuki Isamu (Surname, given name)
Age: 26
Combat Style: Isamu has been trained in Mugen undō (infinite motion), a style that focuses primarily on techniques using the nagamaki, a sword with a katana-like blade and a long handle. As opposed to traditional nagamaki styles, Mugen undō teaching does not insist upon a single proper stance and grip. Rather, it transforms the body and blade into a single flowing entity. The style requires constant, deliberate motions that transition from one to the next without pause in between. The only strikes in Mugen undō are finishing blows. All other sword movement exists only to create openings and defend against enemy blows. There exist eight primary lethal strikes, designed to be transitioned into from nearly any position.

The philosophy of Mugen undō has any who chose to wield its blade submit to a life of servitude towards those too weak to defend themselves from the evils of the world. It values honour in humility and the favoring of others over the self.

Weapon: A nagamaki with a two-foot blade and handle of similar length. The blade’s wooden grip is of a red-brown hue, with white wrapping running two inches from the hilt to around three from the base. It sits in a scabbard of polished black wood with flower motifs running the length of either side, tied with a brown leather strap and slung over Isamu’s left shoulder. It bears the name “A lizard’s tongue flickers, tasting the fire of life.”

Present Appearance: Isamu’s wiry frame is of average height, standing at five feet nine inches. His angular jaw meets a more rounded chin adorned with light, well-kept facial hair. His brown-black coiffure is kept at a moderate length for the most part, the exception being the longer back which forms a lazy V shape with the point at the base of his neck. Isamu wears a tan four-panel umanori over a grey kimono. His feet sport a pair of waraji and dull red han kote cover his hands and forearms. A charcoal short-sleeve dôbuku tied at the breast completes the ensemble. Isamu keeps a Nohkan (a transverse bamboo flute) concealed in an inner fold of his kimono.

Why your character is accompanying the caravan east: Isamu bears the sin of having, through his own cowardice and lack of judgment, caused the death of an entire family during the Hakone incident. Where a single, well-placed strike would have ended the Yure that caused the burning house to collapse upon its trapped inhabitants, his hesitation sealed their fate. Exiled by his master, Ochi Kaede, until he can learn to wield his blade with the true heart of the Mugen undō style, he has decided to undertake a journey of repentance.

Among the people of Hakone, it was said that the melancholy sounds of a Nohkan could soothe the anger of a Yure. Isamu had never put much stock in the rumors, but he had achieved a high degree of proficiency with the instrument. As such, in order to ensure his place among the company, he joined the caravan with the promise of providing protection from spiritual dangers as well as those physical in nature.

Name: Dekasamechin Sourou
Age: 17
Combat Style/Weapon: Sourou uses no formal fighting style or permanent weapons. Instead, he uses a mixed toolbox of bizarre, tricky weapons to confuse, disarm, or otherwise rapidly dispatch opponents. He is extremely agile and cleverly uses his speed and weapons to outwit foes.

Dagger - Your average iron dagger. Sourou has a bad habit of throwing these at enemies.

Tekagi-shuko (x2) - These homemade weapons are favored by Sourou for their deadliness and concealability. They consist of two metal plates, one attached to lower palm, and a larger one, which is covered in small spike-like protrusions, attached to the wrist and forearm, with a leather band to hold them together. While the main function of the spikes is offense, they can also be used to catch weapons, effectively disarming opponents and leaving them open for retaliation with the other hand.

Neko-te (x2) - Another one of Sourou's concealable weapons. The Neko-te are contraptions which fit over the hand similar to gloves, with pins along the back similar to the tekagi-shuko and long, bladed fingers similar to claws.

Steel Chakram (x5) - A sharp, circular throwing weapon which can be quickly aimed and thrown accurately.
Chain whip - A series of conjoined metal rods tipped with a dart on one end and a wooden handle on the other. Like most of Sourou's weapons, it can be concealed and used easily.

Present Appearance: Sourou wears a long, black hooded cloak over his tall frame and shoulder-length black hair. The cloak itself is fairly nondescript, however it's been modified to help conceal Sourou's weapons, mostly with a secret sleeve compartment where the neko-te are often stored. The whip and chakrams are stored in a pair of hidden pockets on each side of the cloak which can be easily accessed during battle. At his waist he carries a small sheath for his dagger, as well as a knapsack, water jug, and eating tin. Inside the knapsack are parts of many dissembled weapons, herbs, and a small kit for treating wounds.

Name: Yoichi
Age: 19
Combat Style/Weapon: No specific combat style, at present he carries only a dagger.
Present Appearance: Yoichi sports long hair tied back multiple times by ribbon like material into a knot positioned on the back of his head. Unlike a traditional top knot the rest of his hair is kept at a normal length, meaning his bangs and all the hair situated around the knot is kept long. His hair itself is an unusual white gray, something Yoichi attributes to 'age'. The clothing he dons is also of simple nature. He wears a gi like dark blue tunic and long gray billow-out trousers, over top of this he wears a pink kimono-esque robe that flows completely-open to his ankles. Yoichi's eyes are of a light blue nature(His hair and eye color have been able to deceive the uneducated into viewing him as an albino though this is not the case) and his over-all face can be described as handsome yet slightly feminine. The rest of his body follows suit with his face, though he does bare a seemingly hidden muscle structure in his body, throwing off, ever so slightly, the overall feminine design.
Why your character is accompanying the caravan east: Yoichi, at present, could be best described as a drifter, thief, or gangster, all of which is work that requires movement.

As an herbalist, his extensive knowledge of flora and their medicinal uses is invaluable when traveling through wilderness. He is also equipped for a variety of procedures should anything go awry.

Ok, this is my first RP game ever, so sorry if I ruin it for everyone with my s*** experience. I will, however, to try my best. Also, give me some pointers if you can. Thanks.

Name: Nari

Had she not left Onimodo Kutama to face the giant Yure alone, perhaps he would have still been alive. She felt that it was her fault that Suzu had been torn from the man she loved, and for that she would do her best to aid the girl as much as she could. As an exorcist of note, the caravan was pleased to take her aboard, should they be encroached upon by malevolent spirits.

Retconned her age a bit...I felt she was too old to have not been married off or something yet

Name: Ryouichi "Zan" Zanji
Age: 34
Combat Style/Weapon: Zan is well trained in Naginatajutsu. He has some knowledge in Kendo and has recently sparked interest in various hand to hand practices.
Present Appearance: Zan stands taller than an average man but in no means a giant. When he is out of his traditional samurai armour, he wears dark grey, one piece kimono, with baggy pants. His armour is dark grey in colour with a golden yellow trim along the edges. He chooses not to wear a face mask to avoid obstructing his vision in combat.
Why your character is accompanying the caravan east: After defending the town of Hakone from the violent onslaught of Yure, Zan decided to resume is old soldier duties by aiding in the escort Hohoemi Suzu.

This character isn't completely accurate to the old one. Decided to remove some silly things I thought of before.

Apologies in advance for my Google translate-level Japanese.

There exist eight primary lethal strikes, designed to be transitioned into from nearly any position:
- Waidosuingu shiage (wide-swing finish): a single horizontal stroke with either hand, starting from the side of the opposite shoulder and following through in an outward motion in order to finish with the arm stretched out at a nigh-perpendicular angle to the torso. The hand executing the attack grips near the hilt, while the rest of the handle rests along the arm, using the elbow for extra leverage.
- Chokusetsu suiryoku (direct thrust): Exactly what the name implies. A two handed thrust with the tip of the blade, usually to the opponent’s heart or gut.
- The rest I will come up with later on. I should get this character sheet finished before the game starts.

If you want to, you could set up a pre-made relationship with someone, through PMs or whatnot.

Will make one, if my computer doesn't reach its endpoint while I write.

Oh, ok. Well my character needs all the friends he can get. As he does rely on others to take out people that are charging straight for him...

Question, stick with the Chinese five element structure? (fire, metal, wood, earth, water) Or use the Japanese? (Fire, water, earth, air, void)

I think my profile from the last one stated the 5 chinese elements but in the RP she actually based her talisman use on the Japanese take.
