Pity neither of the puns were as souper as I was expecting.

So wait, they found a liquid or was it evaporated and they found the traces of it?
The story is kind of misleading.

When I read the extract I imagined it would be like preserved or something.

If they know it's a pot of soup, there must be a trace, but not liquid, possibly a mark that, when analyzed, is shown to be soup (maybe).

Maybe the pot was labelled "Soup".

Why would anyone, label their own pot "Soup" and more specifically, wouldn't the labelling have rubbed off?

Well maybe they have multiple pots for different uses and labeled them as such? I'd rather not use my laundry pot for cooking for one.

Well, maybe it's just me, but I keep my chamber pot under my bed where it belongs and my cooking pot in the kitchen where it also belongs.

But what if you decide to clean all the pots at once, or someone decides to switch the pots for fun?

It'll be like washing a toilet bowl in your kitchen sink. Not very hygienic is it?
And a cooking pot looks much different from a chamber pot.
