Album 2, 7th Nov: Thrupence - Lessons (Originals Mixtape 4)
Ambient / Electronic / Hip Hop

Finally finished up my review.

So much for not reviewing every song separately. Even though I could only listen to an album wrap, basically, I did it anyway. What an idiot.

So, here we go!

Click the album art to listen to it, or you can buy it here.

I expected this album to be pretty good, and to have a couple less spectacular tracks. A lot of the tracks are short, which is disappointing. A couple of the tracks were quite underwhelming, but there are also some great ones. It was also very different in style and sound to Thrupence's usual stuff. Overall, I liked it, anyway.

Hmm - Diamond Drips - Silk - Fish Fingers - Orpheus - Tantrum
Least Favourite tracks
1987 - Rust - Barons & Lords

Review: show
#1 - Intro 0:00 - 0:12
Not really anything to say about "Intro". It's a pretty sounding 15 second intro. It does what it's meant to.
6/10

#2 - Hmm 0:12 - 1:04
"Hmm" is a weird one. I really like it, but it's weird. I should be pretty used to things like this coming from Thrupence, especially after the next track, but apparently not. It has a nice feel, and I enjoyed it, it's really short, though.
7.5/10

#3 - Don't You Mind 1:04 - 3:49
I kinda like "Don't You Mind". It's well done, though I'm not a big fan of the voice in the samples throughout. I liked it, it all works together, but it's not one of the better tracks, in my opinion.
6/10

#4 - Diamond Drips 3:49 - 7:07
When I first listened to the next one, "Diamond Drips", I wasn't sure how I felt about it. It's another pretty unusual one, but after a while, when it gets to around 4:50, it really changes for the better, I think, and I loved it after that. Another really good one.
8.5/10

#5 - Silk 7:07 - 11:03
"Silk" was released early, because the album reached its release date, but didn't come out. I got this track instead. It was the second track I heard, after "Don't You Mind". I liked this one a lot more, straight away, and I still love this one. It's the longest track (though still pretty short), and probably my favourite of the album. Everything about it is so great.
9.5/10

#6 - Rust 11:03 - 12:43
The first track of the album I'm not really a fan of is "Rust". It's okay, but it's nothing special as far as I'm concerned. It's fairly bland, I think, with basically no layers but percussion for a lot of it.
4/10

#7 - Fish Fingers 12:43 - 15:46
Started this song, and was surprised that it was basically just acoustic guitar. "Fish Fingers" is another track that I really like. It's sounds really different to what I'd expect from Thrupence, but it still has a similar Thrupence sound to it. I really like the feel of it, it's pretty relaxed and happy.
9/10

#8 - Orpheus 15:46 - 18:10
Like the previous track, "Orpheus" is fairly calm, and really upbeat, with a lot of guitar. It samples some older Thrupence tracks too, and it works. Later parts of it have a very lo-fi sound to them, which is pretty common for Thrupence, and I love the sound of it. Another favourite.
8.5/10

#9 - Speechless 18:10 - 19:54
"Speechless" is another pretty good one. There's a sample of some group of voices or something that plays frequently throughout, which works surprisingly well. I liked this track quite a bit, but it's not as high up as some others.
7/10

#10 - 1987 19:54 - 21:11
I feel like the album changed, starting at "1987", and not in a good way. It's probably more just that I don't like this type of music, but I didn't really enjoy this track at all.
4/10

#11 - Hot Sand 21:11 - 23:12
Even on first listen, "Hot Sand" sounded very familiar, even though I'm pretty sure I've never heard it before. I don't like how this one starts, and some of the later parts of it are good, but not great, in my opinion.
5/10

#12 - Suicide Is Painless 23:12 - 24:32
In general, I'm pretty mixed on the next one, "Suicide Is Painless". The majority of it I don't like much at all, but there's a short part where it's mostly piano, that I kinda like. Eh, it's okay.
4.5/10

#13 - Barons & Lords 24:32 - 26:25
I kinda like some parts of "Barons & Lords", but for the most part, I didn't enjoy it. Other people might, maybe.
4/10

#14 - Tantrum 26:25 - 29:05
After the many previous tracks that I didn't really like, "Tantrum" was a nice change. It's got a pleasant sound to it, and feels just a little bit sad, during some parts. Overall, though, I thought it was much nicer than the last couple tracks. It's not the best one on the album, but it's still really good.
7.5/10

#15 - 9th Break 29:05 - 30:30
I like "9th Break", it's a really nice song, even though it's nothing special, and doesn't really stand out.
6.5/10

#16 - Romania 30:30 - 34:01
"Romania" starts off well, and I like the first 3 minutes, but the bass and other synth that comes in after then ruins it for me. It's a pretty good song, nonetheless.
6/10

#17 - Outro 34:01 - 34:59
And then it ends off with "Outro". It's a short outro, and it's good. It wraps it up well.
6/10

Overall Rating: 7/10
I liked it quite a bit, even though a few of the tracks weren't my thing. I'd recommend listening to it, since it's only pretty short.

Today:
Heliocentric by The Ocean
Preview: Firmament

I added this album because I almost impulse bought it at a used cd store for a few bucks once. It's one of those sludge metal albums that I'm not crazy about, and the theme is that it's a critique of Christianity.

Stay with me here, I know how that sounds. I was worried the album would be DmC levels of edgy, but thankfully it is not. There was no "GOD IS DEAD *sick guitar solo*" on the album; it really is a well-handled critique. Many of the tracks are about either questions Christianity has a hard time answering or examples of faith halting progress - the album uses heliocentricism (the idea that the earth revolves around the sun rather than the other way around) as a major example. The lyrics generally don't do much for me, though because I've made my peace with the religious debates a long time ago. Some of them dip into subjects I'm really interested in - like the closing track, which asks if all complex things need an architect, where did the architect come from? He must be infinitely more complex than any of his creations, so what created him? What is he made of? I love those kind of grand, cosmic ideas.

Most of the lyrics don't do anything for me though, so it falls back on its sound - which I wasn't particularly impressed with either. I've never really been a fan of "sludge metal" beyond Baroness and some of Mastodon's work, and nothing on the album really stood out to me as impressive. Nothing sounded unimpressive either, to be fair, but this just doesn't tickle me the right way.

Idk. If you like that kind of genre and still enjoy pondering religious questions, you'll get a lot more out of Heliocentric than I did. Nix, if you like the Ocean album you heard today I'd suggest giving this a spin. Otherwise it's really eh to me. I might spin it sometime in the future if I catch the mood, because I'm certain it's good for what it is, but I doubt I'll be in the mood for it again in the forseeable future.

Rating: Okay

nice swans - to be kind review

When I say repetitive, I mean that in the fact that all the songs sound the same. Swans' repetition is in the song structures themselves. It's actually a key part in all of Swans' music, not just To Be Kind.

Also sorry for not doing a review for the past two days. I've been really busy. I was able to listen to Mirage by Camel. Liked it quite a bit!

But I never really got around to listening to X by Klaus Schulze.

I'll be sure to review this Neurosis album when I'm done listening to it, though!

The Ocean - Precambrian

So in this double album the first disc is all sludge metal, and well, it's not very good sludge metal, nothing Baroness, Mastodon, or Acid Bath can't do better, so the first disc is pretty negligible, riffs are whatever, vocals are not interesting and it's pretty unpleasant (some guttural vocals are great, others just don't do anything for me, latter is the case here) so it's really not worth talking about.

The second disc caught my attention, with it's use of sax, strings, piano, and electronic and post-metal influence. This is very interesting for me! Intro is a cool ballad with strings and sax, nice, next track is a 10 minute long post-metal segmented track with things like piano in it, a much better track than anything on the first disc, now, this is my heart breaker: Ectasin. Man oh man, this pisses me off, a great intro leading into a very strong and emotional musical motif of a low note followed by a high note, followed quickly by a low note played so dramatically it connects volumes with me, then it goes into a f*** annoying phase of unresolved riffs, AURGH, THAT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH. It's a f*** djent quack-fest that doesn't resolve itself and to make matters worse it even goes into a hard left and right panning of the same annoying pattern over and over and over. Such a strong first half ruined by this. The album itself likes to get into a phase and repeat it, I wouldn't mind if they were all good, but they are not, lots of tracks are hit and miss and really have annoying guitar parts that either do the same note over and over or some other sound that doesn't go well with me, and these are LONG songs, I can't tolerate these aural crimes on my ears. This could have been so much more, the use of the extra instruments are beautiful, some amazing parts, but overall... a disappointment.

Both discs get a 2/10 because they both pissed me off in some form, either for being negligible, or for getting my hopes up and then delivering my hopes and then crushing it right in front of me.

oops couldn't get time to do yesterdays i'll do that today too

Molotov - Dance and Dense Denso: show
Molotov is a really awesome mexican band. All the band members sing/rap and they don't really keep who plays what very consistent. They run 2 bass' in a lot of songs and they always sound fantastic together. The album I picked I've listened to a couple tracks many times, but I've never really listened to the album in whole much.

Dance and Dense Denso is the third album by Molotov. Generally the songs on fit somewhere between hip hop and punk. There's a lot of variety between the songs, in lyrical content, what instruments, who's singing/rapping/whatevering when & where. Unfortunately even if I was completely fluent in spanish there's a lot of things an average dumb american like me just wouldn't understand. I've never even heard of the Periférico before this album???
I don't know much spanish, so sometimes I have no idea what they're saying, though there's a lot of naughty words/themes in both languages. I swear there's at least 1 curse a verse
I'd rate this album like an 8 or 9 but compared to molotovs earlier albums I just don't like this as much. It's still amazing and I'd recommend it for sure 7/10

Frijolero is probably the most popular track. I love this song, it's not my favourite but it's most people's it seems. It's def one of their more serious songs
Here's one other song to try

Isosine - Mashup Manifesto III

I love mashups so I threw this into the calendar

track review: show
Alive
opens up with "1997" by she, and samples Neil deGrasse Tyson https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... acJo#t=130
it sounds like one of those get inspired videos or something. After the sample ends it starts up Armsistice by Phoenix. Short songs at 1:38. Armsistice is my favourite Phoenix song, the sample of Tyson is awesome, really love this short piece. Ends slow into another incomplete sample of Tyson, and the song instantly transitions into the next track.
Comes and Goes

"Lose Yourself" by Eminem & "Lisztomania" by Phoenix its ok, I like "Lose Yourself" better mashupless

Home at Night
Opens up with the intro to "Homes" by Foxes and the instrumental stays the same all song. Kid Cudi's "Day 'n' Nite" comes in at 1/4 of the song.
Not that great, kind of just Homes with Day 'n Nite filling in some of the vocalless parts. Okay song

They Call Me F.R.E.S.H.
The Ting Tings - "That's Not My Name"
Black Eyed Peas - "Pump It"
kind of obnoxious

Lights Out
there's a lot of different songs/samples in this
it's all put together nicely

Claritycraft
pendulum in the bg
zedd - clarity is a big part of it
bob - beast mode accompanies every drop

pretty blugjhnh

Nonstop Pop 2012

self explanatory
take a trip through 2012s hits.
this is way too boring for 6 minutes
blghghghgh

We Are Coming Undone
trooping though the s*** tracks
i really like this one
taylor swift's we are never getting back together and korn's coming undone
I love how this is edited so much, i love how it all works together. improvement!!!

Super Miles
Super Bass instrumental, vocals from 500 miles. That's basically it. well done, but not good sounding

Radioactive Swimming Pools
radioactive by imagine dragons and swimming pools by kendrick lamar
sounds alright

Youth

bfgdbfbgbfdbbgf not good

Wall of Time
Hans Zimmer - Time
from inception soundtrack
played w/ wonderwall by oasis fit to sound good w/ Time
actually sounds really awesome

Howling Hands
Howling (Âme Remix)
vocals from perth by bon iver
starts up really cool w/ those 2 and goes on w/ those 2
and throws in some parts from a few other songs
glad to be done with this album, this track was alrightish

overall i didn't really enjoy the album. 5/10

Herbie c*** - Sextant

Herbie c*** is a musician I have a s*** of respect for. During his entire musical career he's constantly been exploring new territory, experimenting and pushing the limits of his potential. His albums are generally hit or miss for me but I always appreciate the effort and technical proficiency of his tunes.

Sextant is an excellent LP. It's a massive trip through psychedelic space, some parts cruise by smooth and groovy, and some parts are crazy and hectic and overwhelming. I especially dig the final third of this album, "Hornets". It's crazy stuff, really really fun. I spun it twice!

8-9/10, definitely recommended for any fans of jazz music. Preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b47SQ6y_vys

Age of Adz is so different from Illinoise, it really is hard to compare the two.

But yeah, if I had to choose I'd say Age of Adz.

Lovin' the reviews, guys! I'll be starting on mine soon. I had to get my left wisdom tooth pulled out today, so I just haven't been feeling very linguistical.

Also haven't got around to writing the review bc I was busy watching Bernie (very good movie)

they're definitely different albums, all of his albums sound different really.

from the ones i've heard, i'd probably say the way i rank them from most enjoyable to least is

age of adz > seven swans > illinois > christmas songs > enjoy your rabbit

they're all great though. i love sufjan

From what I've heard, I'd say

Age of Adz > Illinoise > Planetarium

But they're all very close!

People keep suggesting Michigan and Seven Swans, so I'll have to give those albums a listen next month.

I was thinking we'd see how we felt a little closer to the end of the month. Gauge interest after I've had time to look at the stats & all. Doing it back to back might be a little much imo, but if there's enough interest we could definitely do it next month.
