Yeah, Hitler certainly was very religious. >_>

Also, don't lump Christians together on anti-Semitism. Calvinists have generally been tolerant of Jews, for instance.

Science does not argue against religion in the first place (to the contrary, it rebuked the historical notion of materialism, that the universe has no beginning). It neither affirms or disproves God, for instance. I'm also happy you are that quick to make an argument ad hominem.

You invoked Godwin's law though. :wee:

I find that making up your own religion is far more fun.

Sorry, not familiar with Godwin's law. Care to explain? I dislike Wikipedia. It does this thing where it sucks.

I know. I was sarcastic, because people claimed religion was the cause for the Holocaust.

Also, witch hunts are generally overstated in scope when compared to the Stalinist gulags, the Cultural Revolution, Mao's Great Leap Forward and persecution in Albania.

Also, regarding Calvinism and anti-Semitism:

True, though bringing Hitler up when somebody charges religion for causing the Holocaust is not that random. Say, less random than the bulk of all references to Hitler.

Also, I did not apply a reduction to Hitler (perhaps the most common way of bringing Hitler into an online debate).

Atheist. The amount of arrogant idiots, AKA believers, in this forum amazes me.
Let's just take a step back for a moment and look at how justified religion is.
In the sense of what it actually announces as fact, it's f#%$& ridiculous, no matter what religion you're talking about. Think about it, what makes more sense? Chain of events that lead to something else that have been proven by the smartest people in the world, or some unexplainable supernatural f#%$& doing everything?
Now in the sense of how it makes people feel, yes, it makes people more comfortable with death, but how do ya reckon the jews and the witches felt about the whole affair?

Isn't ironic how some if not most of the smartest people in the world have been religous or held spiritual ideas themselves?
Ex. Einstein, Newton, Pasteur', Eyering, Etc.

Lol, TVtropes.

Yes, I do find it ironic. But if we go a little more recent, we've got the likes of Dawkins and Hawkings. Religion among smart people is fading out.

I'm not very religious at all, but I think most people just want something to put their faith into. How do you know there isn't a heaven or hell? We don't either, but wouldn't it be nice to believe you will go to the perfect place when you die? Not just rot in the ground, never being remembered? Plus, religion practices good morals. The common religious person is very kind and helpful. Where as the common atheist (not all atheists, I have really cool atheist friends, but the common) would be like "whatever" to everything.

Didn't mean to offend anyone, just my opinion.

I know, but Godwins Law != Reductio ad Hitlerum.

I am also serious though, who here apart from me, makes up religions?

You must mean Christopher Hitchens. Stephen Hawking is agnostic.

Anyway, I don't know if there is a trend in that. As far as I'm concerned, many researchers have been atheist since the nineteenth century. I'd like some more substantial evidence before calling it a trend. Not to note that smart people can be horrendously fallacious regarding subjects outside their field of research (Ditchkins, derp). In particular in the area of religion, it is not unthinkable for a high school student to outdo some of them to a great degree. Many of them are not an authority regarding religion.
