Yeah, it could be improved in a variety of ways.
I hated the limitation.

It was a revolutionary idea and gave players much more than anyone would habe first expected. I thought it was wonderful in brawl, but yeah if iy returns a lot of upgrades are to be expected.
Doesn't mean the original stage builder was bad at all.

I made some pretty cool stages, that is until i found out about the Stage Builder program, and i was able to make better ones.

Meh, hacks let us make stages with far more potential, Nintendo should learn to take advantage of that. Perhaps stage backgrounds could be based on pictures on a SD card, let stuff overlap, allow transitions, do more, etc.

I really can't disagree more with absolutely everything you just said It SHOULD have been a beautiful feature, but the limitations on it were just too much to make it worthwhile. It was nice for making big, somewhat complex stages, but when you tried to do that you hit the object limit fast. While having it does add some cool stuff to the game, and an excellent opportunity for fun (One of my buddies sent me a stage that just spelled out "TrmX SUCKS" every time he beat me), the limited selection of parts + the object limit + the inability to play them online + the extremely limited number of backgrounds make it just a missed opportunity really But that should all be easy to fix in SSB4.

It was actually perfectly fine if you had an ounce of creativity. The most fun stages are rarely the largest or the most complex.

A high number of objects in custom stages makes the game lag though, especially moving objects. So they will need more memory/power, or whatever is needed for that.
I agree with the points made that there need to be more parts to choose from, more backgrounds, and a higher limit of the number of objects.
Some points i would like to see added: Allow more than one song for a particular stage, as in have the game let you pick two songs instead of one, and if you want just one song for it, select the same song twice. The second one being: Allowing you to place spawn points around, just not anywhere, but on the ground somewhere and not have the game decide for you where the players spawn.

That's a big one too. I have no idea why that wasn't added Maybe for you, but Temple's still my favorite stage across Melee/Brawl/SSF2. The same dull colored blocks and extremely situational set pieces don't allow for much variety. That's the key, variety. It was a nice feature, but it was far too simple to be really interesting (Let alone revolutionary).

But dearest chum, who needs colourfull blocks when you can have all the fun you want with your creativity and imagination. Like the days when Lego® was still simple.
