everyone's looking at iphones like they're the gateway to the future but with one of these things you could build a custom smartphone right in your house

True that. I am kinda new to the 3d printing concept, I was wondering if MakerBots are good for novices like me.

But there are better things to do with 3d printers than fabricating nonexistent figures. It can help you build parts for a quadcopter, or an airsoft turret. I'd use 3d printers to build airsoft weaponry for the s*** and giggles.

that's the ONLY thing to do, pal
think about it: does that airsoft turret exist before you fabricate it

I suppose you're right... On a side note, I hear about people making cheap 3d printers using a Raspberry Pi as the brains/computer for the printer. What's your say on this?
