Quote:
Two conservative Republican lawmakers, Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) and Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), introduced the English Language Unity Act of 2011 on Friday, a bill that requires that all official United States government functions be conducted in English

Quote:
The bill would also establish a uniform language requirement for naturalization and oblige federal government officials to encourage people to learn English.

Why is this even necessary?

discriminating?

Uh, English is our national language.
Hell, English is used worldwide when it comes to business.

Most countries in Asia and Europe teach English in schools.

For someone not to learn English basically dooms them to the business processes of the world.
I'm pretty sure most non-English speakers in the US work in fast food restaurants because they don't have a good education, but if someone had a good education and could get a white collar job, they would need to know English.

Additionally, it's not being forced.
It is encouraged, therefore no discrimination.

People who whine about this don't understand how large of a role English plays worldwide and do not grasp that to have a good future in America or any country, you need to at least speak the language of the country.

Guys, just slapping on the "national language" label won't solve any of these problems...

Encouragement is not forcing people to learn English.

meh... I guess so.

I just find the whole bill a little unnecessary, though. English already plays an essential role, and a person living in the states will need to learn English to succeed. The encouragement is already there without the bill.

While it won't affect you or most people, it DOES make a huge difference, when looking at it from a law-making perspective.

I'm not sure what you mean. As far as I can tell, the bill just said that official government functions were going to be in English...
Again, if the bill won't affect the majority of the people, why is it necessary to make a bill that only affects/targets a small demographic?

... Wha... Euhm... What kind of point are you trying to make, here? That bills should only be made if they affect the majority of the people? What are the bush tax cuts, then?

It's not that bills should be made only if they effect the majority. I just feel that the effects this bill would have are so small and insignificant. The "uniform language requirement" portion for naturalization is pretty pointless too. Naturalization tests already have an English portion, so this isn't adding anything new either. The only thing this bill is doing is placing a shiny label. It has as much impact as labeling Snickerdoodle as "America's official cookie". :/

I just think that this bill is a waste of time when they could be focusing on creating legislation that will actually make a difference. With or without the bill, knowing English is pretty necessary in the U.S., and labeling a national language doesn't add any more incentive to learn English than there already is.
